Psalms 38

Lord, don't lift me up in your fury or discipline me in your heat. Because your arrows have stuck fast in me, and your hand comes down hard on me. There's nothing sound in my flesh because you're angry, and no rest in my bones because of my sin. Because my wrongdoing has gone over my head. Like a heavy load it's too heavy for me.

A heavy load

Lord, don't lift me up in your fury or discipline me in your heat. Because your arrows have stuck fast in me, and your hand comes down hard on me. There's nothing sound in my flesh because you're angry, and no rest in my bones because of my sin. Because my wrongdoing has gone over my head. Like a heavy load it's too heavy for me. My wounds stink and run because of my foolishness. I'm bent over and brought very low. I go about mourning all day long. Because my sides are full of burning, and there's nothing sound in my flesh. I'm weak and crushed very low. I've roared from the groaning of my heart. Lord, everything I want is right before you, and my groaning isn't hidden from you. My heart is pounding. My strength has left me. As for the light of my eyes, it's gone from me too. Those who love me and my friends keep their distance because of my sore, and my relatives stand far off.

Lord, don't pull me up in your fury or set me straight in your heat. I'm bent over and brought right down. I go about mourning all day long. Because my sides are full of burning, and there's nothing sound in my flesh. I'm weak and crushed right down. I've roared from the groaning of my heart. Lord, everything I want is right in front of you, and my groaning isn't hidden from you. My heart is pounding. My strength has left me. As for the light of my eyes, it's gone from me too. The ones who love me and my mates stand off from my wounds, and my relatives stand a long way off.

O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore. There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me. My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness. I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh. I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart. Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee. My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me. My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off.

I'm ready to fall

Those who seek my life lay snares for me; those who seek my hurt speak mischief and plot deceit all day long. But I was like a deaf man who doesn't hear, like a dumb man who doesn't open his mouth. So I was like a man who doesn't hear, and in whose mouth there is no answer. Because I hope in you, Lord. You'll answer, Lord my God. Because I said: Don't let them rejoice over me. When my foot slips they boast over me. Because I'm ready to fall, and my pain is before me all the time. I'll declare my wrongdoing; I'll be sorry for my sin. But my enemies are lively and strong, and those who hate me for a lie have grown many. And those who pay back evil for good are against me, because I chase after good. Don't leave me, Lord. My God, don't be far from me. Hurry up and help me, Lord, my salvation.

And the ones after my life set traps. The ones looking to hurt me talk about ruin and think about cheating all day long. But I was like a deaf man who doesn't hear, like a dumb man who doesn't open his mouth. So I was like a man who doesn't hear, with no comeback in his mouth. Because I hope in you, Lord. You'll answer, Lord my God. Because I said: Don't let them celebrate over me. When my foot slips they big-note themselves against me. Because I'm ready to fall, and my pain is in front of me all the time. Because I'll tell out my wrongdoing. I'm sorry over my sin. But my enemies are lively and strong, and the ones who hate me for a lie have grown many. And the ones who pay back evil for good are against me, because I chase after good. Don't leave me, Lord. My God, don't be far from me. Hurry up and help me, Lord, my salvation.

They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long. But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth. Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs. For in thee, O LORD, do I hope: thou wilt hear, O Lord my God. For I said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me: when my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me. For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me. For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin. But mine enemies are lively, and they are strong: and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied. They also that render evil for good are mine adversaries; because I follow the thing that good is. Forsake me not, O LORD: O my God, be not far from me. Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.
