Against Edom
The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord God says about Edom. We've heard a rumour from the Lord, and a messenger has been sent among the nations: Get up. Let us rise against her in battle. You live hidden away in cracks in the cliffs, high above everyone else, thinking, ‘Who’s ever gonna bring me crashing back down to earth?’ Though you exalt yourself like the eagle and set your nest among the stars, I will bring you down from there, says the Lord. If thieves came at you in the night, they'd take what they wanted and leave the rest. If grape pickers came through, they'd leave something on the vine. You've been stripped bare. How Esau has been searched out. How his hidden things have been hunted down. All the men of your alliance have brought you to the border. The men who were at peace with you have deceived you and got the better of you. The ones who eat your bread have laid a trap under you, and you never saw it coming. On that day, says the Lord, won't I wipe out the wise men of Edom, and every bit of sense from the mountain of Esau? And your fighting men, Teman, will lose their nerve, till every man on the mountain of Esau is cut down.

The day of your brother
For your violence against your brother Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be cut off forever. On the day you stood on the other side, when strangers carried away his forces captive, foreigners entered his gates and cast lots over Jerusalem — you were just like one of them. You should not have stood at the crossroad to cut down the ones getting away. You should not have handed over the survivors on the day of their distress. Because the day of the Lord is close on all the nations. What you've done will be done to you. It comes back on your own head. The way you drank on my holy mountain, that's how all the nations will drink, and keep on drinking. They'll drink and swallow it down, and it'll be as though they'd never been.

And the house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau dry stubble. They'll set them alight and burn through them, and there'll be nobody left of the house of Esau. The Lord has said it. The people of the south will take the mountain of Esau, and the people of the lowland will take the Philistines. They'll take the fields of Ephraim and the fields of Samaria, and Benjamin will take Gilead. And the exiles of this host of the Israelites will possess the land of the Canaanites as far as Zarephath. And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the cities of the south. And saviours will come up on Mount Zion to judge the mountain of Esau. And the kingdom will be the Lord's.
