And it grieved me deeply, so I threw all Tobiah's household belongings out of the room. Then I gave the order, and they cleaned out the rooms. And I brought back into them the vessels of the house of God, with the grain offerings and the incense. And I found out that the portions for the Levites hadn't been given them, so the Levites and the singers who did the work had all gone back to their own fields. So I confronted the officials and said, Why has the house of God been neglected? And I gathered them together and put them back at their posts. Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil into the storerooms. And I put Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites in charge of the storerooms, with Hanan son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, to assist them — because they were considered reliable, and it was their job to share things out to their brothers. Remember me for this, my God, and don't wipe out the good I have done for the house of my God and for its services.

So I confronted the nobles of Judah and said to them, What is this evil thing you are doing, profaning the sabbath day? Didn't your fathers do the same, so that our God brought all this trouble on us and on this city? And now you are bringing more anger on Israel by profaning the sabbath. So when the gates of Jerusalem began to go dark before the sabbath, I gave the order for the doors to be shut, and said they weren't to be opened until after the sabbath. And I put some of my own men at the gates, so no load could be brought in on the sabbath day. So the traders and sellers of all kinds of goods camped outside Jerusalem once or twice. Then I warned them and said to them, Why are you camping in front of the wall? If you do it again, I will lay hands on you. From that time on they didn't come on the sabbath. And I told the Levites to purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the sabbath day holy. Remember me for this too, my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your mercy. In those days I also saw Jews who had married women from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab. And half their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and couldn't speak the Jews' language, but spoke according to the language of one people or another. So I confronted them and cursed them, and struck some of them and pulled out their hair. And I made them swear by God: You won't give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. Didn't Solomon king of Israel sin over exactly this? Among many nations there was no king like him, and he was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Even so, foreign women led him into sin. Should we then listen to you and do all this great evil, breaking faith with our God by marrying foreign women? And one of the sons of Joiada, son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite. So I drove him away from me. Remember them, my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites. So I cleansed them from all foreigners, and set the duties of the priests and the Levites, each man at his own work, and arranged for the wood offering at fixed times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, my God, for good.
