The news from Jerusalem
The words of Nehemiah son of Hachaliah. In the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, while I was in Shushan the palace, Hanani, one of my brothers, came with some men from Judah. I asked them about the Jews who had escaped the captivity and were still there, and about Jerusalem. And they said to me, Those left there in the province after the captivity are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire. And when I heard this, I sat down and wept, and mourned for days, and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.

And when I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned some days, and fasted and prayed in front of the God of heaven.

Nehemiah's prayer
And I said: I beg you, Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant and his mercy with those who love him and keep his commandments — let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant, which I am praying before you now, day and night, for the Israelites your servants. I confess the sins we Israelites have committed against you. Both I and my father's house have sinned. We have acted very corruptly against you, and haven't kept the commandments or the rules or the judgements you gave your servant Moses. Remember, I beg you, the word you gave your servant Moses: If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations. But if you turn back to me and keep my commandments and do them, then even if you were driven to the ends of the heavens, I will gather you from there and bring you to the place I have chosen to set my name. Now these are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great power and your strong hand. Lord, I beg you, listen to the prayer of your servant and to the prayers of your servants who delight in honouring your name. Give your servant success today, and make this man show him mercy. For I was the king's cupbearer.
And I said: Please, Lord God of heaven, the great and terrifying God, who keeps covenant and mercy for the ones who love him and keep his orders — let your ear be listening now and your eyes open, so you can hear the prayer of your servant that I pray in front of you now, day and night, for the people of Israel your servants, and own up to the sins of the people of Israel that we've sinned against you. Both I and my father's house have sinned. We've dealt very rottenly with you and haven't kept the orders or the rules or the judgments that you ordered your servant Moses. Remember, please, the word you ordered your servant Moses: If you break faith, I'll scatter you among the nations. But if you turn back to me and keep my orders and do them — though the ones of you who are thrown out were at the far end of heaven, I'd still gather them from there and bring them to the place I've chosen to set my name there. Now these are your servants and your people, that you've bought back by your great power and by your strong hand. Please, Lord, let your ear be listening now to the prayer of your servant and to the prayer of your servants who take delight in fearing your name. And let your servant do well today, please, and give him mercy in the sight of this man. Because I was the king's cupbearer.
