The Lord's case
Listen now to what the Lord says: Get up, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. Listen, you mountains, to the Lord's case, and you everlasting foundations of the earth. Because the Lord has a case against his people, and he will argue it out with Israel. My people, what have I done to you? How have I worn you out? Answer me. I brought you up out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house of slavery. I sent Moses before you, and Aaron and Miriam. My people, remember what Balak king of Moab planned, and what Balaam son of Beor answered him, from Shittim to Gilgal — so you might know the righteous acts of the Lord. What should I bring when I come before the Lord and bow before God on high? Should I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Should I give my firstborn for my rebellion, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?
Listen now to what the Lord says: Get up and take your case to the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. Listen, you mountains, to the Lord's case, and you strong foundations of the earth. Because the Lord has a case with his people, and he'll argue it out with Israel. My people, what have I done to you? What have I worn you out with? Answer me. Because I brought you up out of the land of Egypt and bought you back out of the house of slaves. And I sent Moses in front of you, and Aaron and Miriam. My people, remember now what Balak king of Moab planned, and what Balaam son of Beor answered him, from Shittim to Gilgal — so you know the righteous acts of the Lord. What will I come in front of the Lord with, and bow myself in front of the high God? Will I come in front of him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousand rivers of oil? Will I give my firstborn for my rebellion, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He's shown you, man, what's good. And what does the Lord want from you but to do what's fair, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?
Hear ye now what the LORD saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice. Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD’s controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel. O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me. For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD. Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

Dishonest scales
The voice of the Lord cries out to the city, and the man of wisdom will see your name. Listen to the rod, and to the one who appointed it. Are there still treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is disgusting? Should I count them pure with dishonest scales and a bag of deceitful weights? Because her rich men are full of violence, and her people tell lies, and their tongues speak deceit in their mouths. So I too will make you sick by striking you, laying you waste because of your sins. You will eat but not be satisfied, and emptiness will remain inside you. You will take hold but not deliver, and whatever you do deliver I will hand over to the sword. You will sow but not reap. You will press olives but not rub yourself with the oil. You will tread grapes but not drink the wine. You have kept the rules of Omri and followed everything the house of Ahab did. You have walked by their advice. So I will hand you over to ruin and your people to scorn, and you will carry the shame of my people.
The voice of the Lord calls out to the town, and the wise man will see your name. Listen to the rod and the one who set it up. Are there still the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the short measure that's disgusting? Should I count them clean with dishonest scales and with a bag of cheating weights? Because the rich men of the town are full of violence, and the people living there have spoken lies, and their tongue is a cheat in their mouth. So I'll make you sick by striking you, making you a wreck for your sins. You'll eat and you won't be full, and there'll be emptiness in the middle of you. And you'll take hold and won't carry off, and what you carry off I'll hand over to the sword. You'll sow and you won't reap. You'll tread the olives and you won't anoint yourself with oil, and the sweet wine and you won't drink wine. Because you keep the rules of Omri and everything the house of Ahab did, and you walk in their plans — so I'll make you a wreck, and the people living there something to hiss at. So you'll carry the insults of my people.
The LORD’s voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it. Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable? Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights? For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth. Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins. Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword. Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine. For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.
