The birth of Jesus

Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way. When his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man and unwilling to make a public example of her, decided to divorce her quietly. But while he was thinking about these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife. Because what is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a son, and you will call his name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. Now all this happened so that what the Lord had spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: Look, a virgin will be with child and will bring forth a son, and they will call his name Emmanuel — which means, God with us. Then Joseph, waking from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had told him, and took his wife. And he didn't sleep with her until after she'd given birth to her firstborn son. And he called his name Jesus.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this. When his mother Mary was promised to Joseph, before they came together she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man and not willing to make a public show of her, meant to put her away quietly. But while he thought about these things, look — the angel of the Lord showed himself to him in a dream: Joseph son of David, don't be frightened to take Mary as your wife. Because what's conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she'll have a son, and you'll call his name Jesus. Because he'll save his people from their sins. Now all this was done so what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet could be carried out: Look — a virgin will be pregnant and will have a son, and they'll call his name Immanuel — which is, being put another way, God with us. Then Joseph, being raised from sleep, did the way the angel of the Lord had ordered him and took his wife. And didn't know her till she'd had her firstborn son. And he called his name Jesus.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
