The covenant with Levi
And now, you priests, this order is for you. If you won't listen, and if you won't take it to heart and give glory to my name, says the Lord Almighty, then I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. In fact I have cursed them already, because you are not taking it to heart. Look, I will corrupt your seed and spread dung on your faces, even the dung from your feasts, and one will carry you away with it. Then you will know I sent this order to you, so my covenant with Levi could stand, says the Lord Almighty. My covenant with him was life and peace, and I gave them to him for the fear with which he feared me and stood in awe of my name. True teaching was in his mouth, and nothing crooked was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many away from wrongdoing. For a priest's lips ought to guard knowledge, and people should look for teaching from his mouth, because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty. But you have wandered off the track. You have made many stumble over the law. You have wrecked the covenant of Levi, says the Lord Almighty. So I have made you contemptible and base before all the people, because you have not kept my ways but have shown partiality in the law.
And now this order is for you, priests. If you won't listen and if you won't set your heart to give glory to my name, says the Lord Almighty, then I'll send a curse on you and I'll curse your blessings. Yes, I've already cursed them, because you don't set your heart on it. Look — I'll spoil your seed and spread dung on your faces, the dung of your festivals. And you'll be carried away with it. And you'll know I've sent this order to you, so my covenant with Levi could stand, says the Lord Almighty. My covenant with him was life and peace, and I gave them to him for the fear he feared me with. And he stood in awe of my name. The teaching of truth was in his mouth, and no wrong was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and straightness, and he turned plenty of people away from wrongdoing. Because the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and men should look for teaching at his mouth. Because he's the messenger of the Lord Almighty. But you've turned aside out of the way. You've made plenty stumble at the teaching. You've broken the covenant with Levi, says the Lord Almighty. So I've made you looked down on and cheap in front of all the people, because you haven't kept my ways but have taken sides in the teaching.
And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you. If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart. Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it. And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the LORD of hosts. My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid before my name. The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity. For the priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts. But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts. Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.
And now, you priests, this order is for you.
And now this order is for you, priests.
And now, O ye priests, this commandment is for you.

Look — I'll spoil your seed and spread dung on your faces, the dung of your festivals. And you'll be carried away with it.
Behold, I will corrupt your seed, and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and one shall take you away with it.
Then you will know I sent this order to you, so my covenant with Levi could stand, says the Lord Almighty.
And you'll know I've sent this order to you, so my covenant with Levi could stand, says the Lord Almighty.
And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.
My covenant with him was life and peace, and I gave them to him for the fear with which he feared me and stood in awe of my name.
My covenant with him was life and peace, and I gave them to him for the fear he feared me with. And he stood in awe of my name.
My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared me, and was afraid before my name.
True teaching was in his mouth, and nothing crooked was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many away from wrongdoing.
The teaching of truth was in his mouth, and no wrong was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and straightness, and he turned plenty of people away from wrongdoing.
The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity.
For a priest's lips ought to guard knowledge, and people should look for teaching from his mouth, because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty.
Because the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and men should look for teaching at his mouth. Because he's the messenger of the Lord Almighty.
For the priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.
But you have wandered off the track. You have made many stumble over the law. You have wrecked the covenant of Levi, says the Lord Almighty.
But you've turned aside out of the way. You've made plenty stumble at the teaching. You've broken the covenant with Levi, says the Lord Almighty.
But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.
So I have made you contemptible and base before all the people, because you have not kept my ways but have shown partiality in the law.
So I've made you looked down on and cheap in front of all the people, because you haven't kept my ways but have taken sides in the teaching.
Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.
Dealing treacherously
Haven't we all got one father? Didn't one God create us? Then why do we deal treacherously with one another, profaning the covenant of our fathers? Judah has dealt treacherously, and a disgusting thing has been committed in Israel and Jerusalem. Judah has profaned the holiness of the Lord which he loved, and has married the daughter of a strange god. May the Lord cut off from the tents of Jacob the man who does this — the master and the scholar — and the one who brings an offering to the Lord Almighty. And here is another thing you do. You cover the Lord's altar with tears, with weeping and groaning, because he no longer takes notice of the offering or accepts it gladly from your hands. And you ask, Why? Because the Lord has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, and you have broken faith with her — though she is your companion, and your wife by covenant. And did he not make one? Yet he had the rest of the Spirit. And why one? So that he might seek godly offspring. So watch your spirit, and let no one deal treacherously with the wife of his youth. For the Lord, the God of Israel, says that he hates divorce, and the man who covers his garment with violence, says the Lord Almighty. So watch yourselves, and do not break faith. You have worn the Lord out with your words. And you come back with, How have we worn him out? By saying, Everyone who does evil is fine in the Lord's sight, and he's pleased with them — or, Where is the God of justice, then?
Haven't we all got one father? Hasn't one God created us? So why do we deal treacherously with each other, making common the covenant of our fathers? Judah has dealt treacherously, and a disgusting thing has been done in Israel and in Jerusalem. Because Judah has made common the holy thing of the Lord that he loved, and has married the daughter of a strange god. The Lord will cut off the man who does this — whoever he is — out of the tents of Jacob, and the one who brings an offering to the Lord Almighty. And you've done this too: you've covered the altar of the Lord with tears, with weeping and groaning — so he doesn't look at the offering any more or take it with pleasure from your hand. And you say: Why? Because the Lord has been the witness between you and the wife of your youth, that you've dealt treacherously with — though she's your mate and the wife of your covenant. And didn't he make one, though he had the rest of the spirit? And why one? Because he was looking for godly offspring. So watch your spirit, and don't let anyone deal treacherously with the wife of his youth. Because the Lord God of Israel says he hates sending away, and covering violence with your clothes. So watch your spirit, and don't deal treacherously. You've worn the Lord out with your words. And you say: How have we worn him out? By saying that everyone who does wrong is good in the eyes of the Lord and he takes pleasure in them — or, Where's the God of judgment?
Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers? Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god. The LORD will cut off the man that doeth this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering unto the LORD of hosts. And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand. Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously. Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?
