The lost sheep and the lost coin
Then all the tax collectors and sinners came near him to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes grumbled, saying, This man welcomes sinners and eats with them. And he told them this parable, saying, Which man among you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, doesn't leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home he calls his friends and neighbours together, saying to them, Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep that was lost. I tell you that in the same way there will be joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, more than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. Or what woman, having ten pieces of silver, if she loses one piece, doesn't light a lamp and sweep the house and look carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it she calls her friends and neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me, because I have found the piece I had lost. In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

And nobody gave him anything. And when he came to himself he said, How many of my father's hired men have bread enough and to spare, and here I am dying of hunger. I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me one of your hired men. And he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran, and threw his arms round his neck and kissed him. And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your eyes, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his servants, Bring out the best robe and put it on him. And put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and be merry.
