And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and rules of the Lord. And they had no child, because Elisabeth was barren, and they were both well on in years. Now while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division, according to the custom of the priesthood, the lot fell to him to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. And the whole crowd of the people were praying outside at the time of incense. And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. And when Zacharias saw him he was troubled, and fear fell on him. But the angel said to him, Don't be afraid, Zacharias. Because your prayer is heard, and your wife Elisabeth will bear you a son, and you will call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. Because he will be great in the LORD's eyes. He will drink neither wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb. And he will turn many of the Israelites to the Lord their God. And he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just — to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. And Zacharias said to the angel, How will I know this? Because I am an old man, and my wife is well on in years. And the angel answered him, I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. And I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. And look — you will be silent and unable to speak until the day these things happen, because you didn't believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their season. And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wondering that he stayed so long in the temple. And when he came out he couldn't speak to them. And they realised he had seen a vision in the temple, because he kept making signs to them and remained speechless. And when the days of his service were finished, he went home. And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and kept herself hidden five months, saying, This is what the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my disgrace among men.

And Zacharias said to the angel, How will I know this? Because I am an old man, and my wife is well on in years.

The angel comes to Mary
And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in to her and said, Greetings, you who are highly favoured. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women. And when she saw him she was troubled at his words, and wondered what sort of greeting this could be. And the angel said to her, Don't be afraid, Mary. God has been gracious to you. And look — you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a son, and you will call his name JESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest. And the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. And he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. Then Mary said to the angel, How can this be, seeing I have not known a man? And the angel answered her, The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you. So the holy one who is born of you will be called the Son of God. And look — your relative Elisabeth has conceived a son in her old age. And this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. Because with God nothing will be impossible. And Mary said, Here am I, the servant of the Lord. Let it be to me according to your word. And the angel left her.

And Mary said: Look — the servant of the Lord. Let it be to me the way you've said. And the angel went from her.
And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Mary's song
And in those days Mary got up and went in a hurry into the hill country, to a town of Juda, and went into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elisabeth. And when Elisabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she called out with a loud voice and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? Because as soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she who believed, because what was told her from the Lord will be carried out. And Mary said: My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour. Because he has looked on the low estate of his servant. For look — from now on all generations will call me blessed. Because he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is on those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has pulled down the mighty from their seats, and lifted up those of low degree. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever. And Mary stayed with her about three months, and went back to her own house.

Because the things told her from the Lord will be carried out. And Mary said: My soul makes the Lord great, and my spirit has celebrated in God my Saviour. Because he's looked at the low state of his servant. Because look — from now on all generations will call me blessed. Because the one who's mighty has done great things to me. And holy is his name. And his mercy is on the ones who fear him from generation to generation. He's shown strength with his arm. He's scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He's put down the mighty from their seats and has lifted up the ones of low degree. He's filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he's sent away empty. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
