The gold gone dull

How the gold has grown dim, the finest gold changed. The stones of the sanctuary are poured out at the head of every street. The precious sons of Zion, worth their weight in fine gold — how they are counted as clay pots, the work of a potter's hands. Even the sea monsters draw out the breast and give suck to their young. The daughter of my people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. The nursing infant's tongue sticks to the roof of his mouth for thirst. The little children beg for bread, and nobody gives them any. Those who fed delicately are desolate in the streets. Those brought up in scarlet embrace rubbish heaps. The punishment of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment, with no hand laid on her. Her Nazarites were purer than snow, whiter than milk. They were more ruddy in body than rubies; their polishing was like sapphire. Now their faces are blacker than soot. They are not recognised in the streets. Their skin has shrivelled on their bones; it has dried up like a stick. Those killed by the sword are better off than those killed by hunger, who waste away, pierced through for want of the fruits of the field. The hands of compassionate women have cooked their own children. They became their food in the destruction of the daughter of my people. The Lord has carried out his fury. He has poured out his fierce anger. He has kindled a fire in Zion, and it has eaten up her foundations. The kings of the earth and everyone living in the world would not have believed that an enemy could enter the gates of Jerusalem.

How the gold has gone dull, the good gold changed. The stones of the holy place are poured out at the head of every street. The precious sons of Zion, worth their weight in fine gold — how they're counted as clay pots, the work of a potter's hands. Even the sea monsters give the breast and feed their young. The daughter of my people has turned cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. The tongue of the baby sticks to the roof of its mouth for thirst. The little children ask for bread, and nobody breaks it for them. The ones who ate the best food are wrecked in the streets. The ones brought up in scarlet take hold of dung heaps. Because the punishment of the wrongdoing of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was overturned in a moment with no hands laid on her. Her nobles were purer than snow, whiter than milk. Their bodies were redder than rubies, their polish like sapphire. Their look is blacker than coal now. They're not known in the streets. Their skin sticks to their bones. It's dried up like a stick. The ones killed by the sword are better off than the ones killed by hunger. Because these waste away, run through for want of the fruit of the field. The hands of women who felt for their own have cooked their own children. They were their food in the ruin of the daughter of my people. The Lord has finished his fury. He's poured out the heat of his anger. And he's lit a fire in Zion that's eaten up her foundations. The kings of the earth and all the people of the world wouldn't have believed that the one against them and the enemy would come into the gates of Jerusalem.

How is the gold become dim! how is the most fine gold changed! the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street. The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter! Even the sea monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones: the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. The tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst: the young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them. They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills. For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her. Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was of sapphire: Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick. They that be slain with the sword are better than they that be slain with hunger: for these pine away, stricken through for want of the fruits of the field. The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children: they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people. The LORD hath accomplished his fury; he hath poured out his fierce anger, and hath kindled a fire in Zion, and it hath devoured the foundations thereof. The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should have entered into the gates of Jerusalem.

It was for the sins of her prophets

It was for the sins of her prophets and the guilt of her priests, who shed the blood of the righteous within her. They wandered blind through the streets, so defiled with blood that nobody could touch their clothes. Away, unclean, people shouted at them. Away, away, don't touch. So they fled and wandered, and among the nations it was said, They can stay here no longer. The Lord himself has scattered them. He will not look on them again. They showed no respect to the priests and no favour to the elders. As for us, our eyes wore out looking for help that never came. From our watchtowers we watched for a nation that could not save us. They dogged our steps so we could not walk in our streets. Our end was near. Our days were finished. Our end had come. Our pursuers were swifter than eagles in the sky. They chased us over the mountains and lay in wait for us in the wilderness. The breath of our nostrils, the Lord's anointed, was caught in their pits — the one we said we would live under, in his shadow, among the nations. Rejoice and be glad, daughter of Edom, living in the land of Uz. The cup will come round to you as well. You will get drunk and strip yourself bare. Your punishment is complete, daughter of Zion. He will not send you into exile again. But he will punish your guilt, daughter of Edom, and expose your sins.

It was for the sins of her prophets and the wrongdoing of her priests, who spilt the blood of the righteous in the middle of her. They wandered like blind men in the streets. They made themselves filthy with blood, so men couldn't touch their clothes. Get away, they cried at them — unclean. Get away, get away, don't touch. When they ran off and wandered, they said among the nations: They won't stay here any more. The face of the Lord has scattered them. He won't look at them again. They didn't respect the priests. They didn't show favour to the elders. As for us, our eyes still failed for our empty help. In our watching we watched for a nation that couldn't save us. They hunt our steps, so we can't go in our streets. Our end is close. Our days are finished, because our end has come. The ones chasing us are faster than the eagles of the sky. They chased us on the mountains. They lay in wait for us in the wilderness. The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the Lord, was caught in their pits — the one we said we'd live under his shadow among the nations. Celebrate and be glad, daughter of Edom, living in the land of Uz. The cup will go past to you too. You'll be drunk and strip yourself bare. The punishment of your wrongdoing is finished, daughter of Zion. He won't carry you off any more. He'll deal with your wrongdoing, daughter of Edom. He'll uncover your sins.

For the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her, They have wandered as blind men in the streets, they have polluted themselves with blood, so that men could not touch their garments. They cried unto them, Depart ye; it is unclean; depart, depart, touch not: when they fled away and wandered, they said among the heathen, They shall no more sojourn there. The anger of the LORD hath divided them; he will no more regard them: they respected not the persons of the priests, they favoured not the elders. As for us, our eyes as yet failed for our vain help: in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us. They hunt our steps, that we cannot go in our streets: our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come. Our persecutors are swifter than the eagles of the heaven: they pursued us upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness. The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the LORD, was taken in their pits, of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the heathen. Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz; the cup also shall pass through unto thee: thou shalt be drunken, and shalt make thyself naked. The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he will no more carry thee away into captivity: he will visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will discover thy sins.
