One tribe missing
Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpeh, saying, None of us will give his daughter to a Benjamite as a wife. And the people came to the house of God and sat there before God until evening, and lifted up their voices and wept bitterly. And they said, Lord God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that today one tribe should be missing from Israel? And the next day the people got up early and built an altar there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. And the Israelites said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who didn't come up to the Lord with the assembly? Because they had taken a solemn oath about anyone who didn't come up to the Lord at Mizpeh, saying, He will surely be put to death. And the Israelites grieved for Benjamin their brother, and said, One tribe is cut off from Israel today. What are we to do about wives for those who are left, seeing we have sworn by the Lord not to give them any of our daughters as wives? And they said, Which of the tribes of Israel didn't come up to Mizpeh to the Lord? And it turned out that nobody from Jabeshgilead had come to the camp, to the assembly. Because when the people were counted, there was nobody there from Jabeshgilead. So the assembly sent twelve thousand of their bravest men there, and ordered them, Go and put the people of Jabeshgilead to the sword, along with the women and the children. And this is what you are to do. Completely destroy every male, and every woman who has lain with a man. And they found among the people of Jabeshgilead four hundred young virgins who had never lain with a man. And they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan. And the whole assembly sent word to the people of Benjamin at the rock of Rimmon, and offered them peace. So Benjamin came back at that time, and they gave them the women they had kept alive from Jabeshgilead. But there still weren't enough for them.

And this is what you'll do: you'll completely wreck every male, and every woman who's lain with a man. And they found among the people of Jabesh Gilead four hundred young women who hadn't known a man by lying with him. And they brought them to the camp at Shiloh in the land of Canaan. And the whole gathering sent word to speak to the sons of Benjamin at the rock of Rimmon, and to call peacefully to them. And Benjamin came back at that time. And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabeshgilead to the assembly. For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead there. And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children. And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man. And they said, There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, so a tribe isn't wiped out of Israel. But we can't give them wives from our own daughters, because the Israelites have sworn, Cursed be anyone who gives a wife to Benjamin. Then they said, Look, there is a feast of the Lord at Shiloh every year, in a place north of Bethel, east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah. So they ordered the people of Benjamin, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards. And watch. And when the daughters of Shiloh come out to join the dancing, come out of the vineyards, and every man catch himself a wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. And when their fathers or brothers come to us to complain, we will say to them, Be favourable to them for our sakes, because we did not reserve a wife for each man in the war. And you did not give them to them yourselves, so you are not guilty. And the people of Benjamin did so. They took wives to match their number, from the dancers they caught. Then they went back to their own inheritance, and rebuilt the towns and lived in them. And at that time the Israelites left there, every man to his tribe and to his family, and every man went out from there to his own inheritance. In those days there was no king in Israel. Every man did what was right in his own eyes.

Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin? And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel. Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin. Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah. And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance. In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
