The Danites look for land
In those days there was no king in Israel. And in those days the tribe of the Danites was looking for an inheritance to live in, because up to that time no inheritance had fallen to them among the tribes of Israel. And the children of Dan sent five men from their clan, able men from Zorah and Eshtaol, to spy out the land and search it. And they said to them, Go and search the land. And they came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and stayed there. When they were near the house of Micah, they recognised the voice of the young Levite. So they turned in there and said to him, Who brought you here? And what are you doing in this place? And what have you got here? And he said to them, Micah has done this and that for me. He has hired me, and I am his priest. And they said to him, Ask counsel of God, please, so we can know whether the journey we are on will go well. And the priest said to them, Go in peace. The journey you are on is before the Lord. Then the five men left and came to Laish, and saw the people living there carelessly, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure. There was no magistrate in the land who could put them to shame in anything, and they were far from the Zidonians and had no business with anyone. And they came back to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol, and their brothers said to them, What do you say? And they said, Get up, and let us go up against them. Because we have seen the land, and it is very good. And are you going to sit still? Don't be slow about going in and taking possession of the land. When you get there you will come to a people living without a care, and to a broad land. God has given it into your hands — a place where nothing on earth is lacking.

So six hundred men of the clan of the Danites set out from Zorah and Eshtaol, armed for war. And they went up and camped at Kirjathjearim in Judah. That is why the place is called Mahanehdan to this day. It is west of Kirjathjearim. And from there they went on to the hill country of Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah. Then the five men who had gone to spy out the country of Laish said to their brothers, Do you know that in these houses there is a priestly apron and household gods and a carved image and a cast image? Now think what you ought to do. So they turned that way and came to the house of the young Levite, at Micah's house, and greeted him. And the six hundred Danites, armed for war, stood at the entrance of the gate. And the five men who had gone to spy out the land went up and came in and took the carved image and the priestly apron and the household gods and the cast image, while the priest stood at the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed for war. And when these men went into Micah's house and took the carved image, the priestly apron, the household gods and the cast image, the priest said to them, What are you doing? And they said to him, Be quiet. Put your hand over your mouth and come with us, and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be priest to the household of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and a clan in Israel? And the priest was glad in his heart. He took the priestly apron and the household gods and the carved image, and went in among the people. So they turned and went, and put the little ones and the livestock and the goods in front of them. And when they were a good way from Micah's house, the men in the houses near Micah's were called out, and they caught up with the children of Dan. And they shouted after the children of Dan. And the Danites turned round and said to Micah, What is the matter with you, that you have called your men out? And he said, You have taken the gods I made, and the priest, and gone off. And what have I got left? So how can you say to me, What is the matter with you? And the children of Dan said to him, Don't let your voice be heard among us, or angry men might set on you, and you would lose your life and the lives of your household. And the children of Dan went on their way. And when Micah saw they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his house.

Put your hand over your mouth and come with us, and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest to one man's house, or to be a priest to a tribe and a family in Israel? And the priest's heart was glad, and he took the ephod and the household gods and the carved image and went in among the people. So they turned and went off, and put the little ones and the cattle and the goods in front of them. And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men in the houses near Micah's house gathered together and caught up with the sons of Dan. And they called out to the sons of Dan. And these went into Micah’s house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye? And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel? And the priest’s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people. So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them. And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah’s house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan. And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company? And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee? And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household. And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.
