Dear friends, I was giving every effort to write to you about the salvation we share, but I needed to write and urge you to earnestly contend for the faith that was once delivered to the saints. Because certain men have slipped in unnoticed — men marked out long ago for this judgment. Godless men, who twist the grace of our God into an excuse for doing whatever they like, and who disown the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

The ungodly
I want to remind you, though you know it all already, that the Lord saved a people out of the land of Egypt, and afterwards destroyed the ones who wouldn't believe. And the angels who didn't stay in their place but walked off from where they belonged — he's got them in chains that don't break, in the dark, waiting on the judgment of the great day. Sodom and Gomorrha and the cities around them did the same, giving themselves over to sexual immorality and going after strange flesh. They stand as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Likewise these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. But Michael the archangel, when he was going head to head with the devil over the body of Moses, wouldn't put a slur on him. All he said was: The Lord rebuke you. But these men run down whatever they don't understand. And the things they do understand — by instinct, like animals — are the very things that ruin them. It'll go badly for them. They've taken the road Cain took, run greedily after Balaam's error for reward, and perished in the rebellion of Core. These are blemishes at your love feasts, feasting with you and feeding themselves without fear. They’re clouds without water, blown about by winds; trees whose fruit withers, fruitless, twice dead and pulled up by the roots. Wild waves of the sea, throwing up their own shame like foam. Wandering stars, with the blackest dark kept for them forever. And Enoch, seventh from Adam, prophesied about them too: Look — the Lord is coming with ten thousands of his saints, to judge the lot of them, and to show every godless one of them up for every godless thing they've done, and for every hard word godless sinners have said against him. These are the grumblers, the ones with a complaint about everything, chasing after whatever they want. Their mouths are full of big talk, and they'll flatter a man to his face if there's something in it for them.
So I'll put you in mind, though you once knew this, how the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterwards wrecked the ones who didn't believe. Build yourselves up
But you, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ told you beforehand. They told you there would be mockers in the last time, walking after their own ungodly lusts. These are the ones who separate themselves — sensual, and without the Spirit. But you, dear friends, build yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in the love of God while you wait on the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. And have compassion on some, making a difference. And save others with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. Now to him who is able to keep you on your feet, and to set you before his glory without a fault in you and with great joy, to the only wise God our Saviour be glory and majesty, dominion and power, now and forever. Amen.

These are the ones who set themselves apart, natural, not having the Spirit. But you, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to everlasting life. And of some have pity, telling them apart. And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the clothing spotted by the flesh. Now to him who's able to keep you from falling and to set you in front of the presence of his glory without fault with great joy, to the only wise God our Saviour be glory and greatness, rule and power, both now and forever. Amen.

But you, dear friends, build yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.
