The towns of refuge
The Lord spoke to Joshua too: Tell the Israelites: Set apart the cities of refuge I spoke to you about through Moses, so that anyone who kills someone accidentally and unintentionally can flee there. They will be a refuge from the avenger of blood. When the fugitive reaches one of those cities, he is to stand at the city gate and explain his case to the elders. They are to bring him into the city and give him a place to live among them. if the avenger of blood chases him, then they won't hand the killer over into his hand — because he struck his neighbour without meaning to and hadn't hated him before. he'll live in that city till he stands in front of the assembly for judgment, and till the death of the high priest who's there in those days. Then the killer can return and come into his own city and into his own house, into the city he ran from. they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in Mount Naphtali, and Shechem in Mount Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba, which is Hebron, in the hills of Judah. on the other side of the Jordan by Jericho eastward, they set apart Bezer in the wilderness on the plain, out of the tribe of Reuben; and Ramoth in Gilead, out of the tribe of Gad; and Golan in Bashan, out of the tribe of Manasseh. These cities were set apart for every Israelite and for foreigners living among them.
