Nicodemus
There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know you are a teacher come from God, because nobody can do these signs you do unless God is with him. Jesus answered him, I tell you the truth, unless a man is born again, he can't see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he go into his mother's womb a second time and be born? Jesus answered, I tell you the truth, unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he can't enter the kingdom of God. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Don't be surprised that I said to you, You must be born again. The wind blows where it likes, and you hear the sound of it, but you can't tell where it comes from or where it goes. It is like that with everyone born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered him, How can these things be? Jesus answered him, Are you a teacher of Israel, and you don't know these things? I tell you the truth, we speak what we know and bear witness to what we have seen. And you don't accept our witness. If I have told you earthly things and you don't believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? And nobody has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from heaven — the Son of man, who is in heaven. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, so that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, so that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Because God didn't send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but so the world through him might be saved. Whoever believes in him isn't condemned. But whoever doesn't believe is condemned already, because he hasn't believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. And this is the condemnation: that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. Because everyone who does evil hates the light, and won't come to the light, in case his deeds are exposed. But whoever does the truth comes to the light, so it may be plain that what he has done has been done in God.

And John was baptising at Aenon near Salim as well, because there was plenty of water there. And people came and were baptised. Because John hadn't been thrown into prison yet. Then a question arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew about purification. And they came to John and said to him, Rabbi, the man who was with you beyond the Jordan, the one you bore witness to — look, he is baptising, and everyone is going to him. John answered, A man can receive nothing unless it is given him from heaven. You yourselves bear me witness that I said, I am not the Christ, but I am sent ahead of him. The one who has the bride is the groom. But the groom's friend, who stands and listens for him, is very glad at the sound of the groom's voice. So this joy of mine is complete. He must increase, but I must decrease. The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all.
