The Word
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness of the Light, so that through him all men might believe. He wasn't that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which gives light to every man coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world didn't know him. He came to his own, and his own didn't receive him. But to all who did receive him, he gave the right to become the sons of God — to those who believe in his name, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh and lived among us — and we saw his glory, the glory of the Father's one and only Son — full of grace and truth. John bore witness of him and cried out, saying, This was the one I spoke of: he who comes after me is ahead of me, because he was before me. And out of his fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. Because the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, has made him known.

And those who had been sent were from the Pharisees. And they asked him and said to him, Why do you baptise, then, if you aren't the Christ, or Elias, or that prophet? John answered them, I baptise with water. But there is one standing among you whom you don't know. He is the one coming after me, who is ahead of me, and I am not worthy to undo the strap of his sandal. These things happened at Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptising. The next day John saw Jesus coming to him and said, Look — the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. This is the one I spoke about when I said, After me comes a man who is ahead of me, because he was before me. And I didn't know him. But so he might be revealed to Israel, that is why I came baptising with water. And John bore witness, saying, I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and it stayed on him. And I didn't know him. But the one who sent me to baptise with water said to me, The one you see the Spirit coming down on and staying on — he is the one who baptises with the Holy Spirit. And I have seen it, and I have borne witness that this is the Son of God.

They said to him, Rabbi — which means Master — where are you staying? He said to them, Come and see. They came and saw where he was staying, and stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. The first thing he did was find his own brother Simon, and he said to him, We have found the Messias — which means the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus looked at him he said, You are Simon son of Jona. You will be called Cephas — which means a stone. The next day Jesus decided to go into Galilee, and he found Philip and said to him, Follow me. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.
