The day of the Lord

Blow the trumpet in Zion. Sound the alarm on my holy mountain. Let everyone in the land tremble, because the day of the Lord is coming. It is close — a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness. Like the morning spreading over the mountains comes a great and strong people. There has never been anything like it, and there never will be again, through many generations. Fire eats away in front of them, and behind them a flame burns. The land is like the garden of Eden ahead of them, and a desert waste behind. Nothing gets away from them. They look like horses. Like cavalry, so they run. With a noise like chariots they leap over the mountain tops, like fire crackling through stubble, like a strong army drawn up for battle. Before them people are in anguish. Every face goes pale. They charge like fighting men. They scale the wall like soldiers. Every one holds his line, and they do not break ranks. They do not jostle each other. Each keeps to his own path. And when they fall upon the sword, they are not wounded. They rush the city. They run along the wall. They climb into the houses and come in through the windows like a thief. The earth quakes before them and the heavens shake. Sun and moon go dark, and the stars hold back their light. And the Lord gives voice at the head of his army. His camp is huge. Mighty is the one who carries out his word. The day of the Lord is great, and very terrible. Who can stand it?

Blow the trumpet in Zion and sound the alarm on my holy mountain. Let everyone living in the land shake, because the day of the Lord is coming — because it's close. A day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, spread on the mountains like the dawn — a people great and strong. There's never been anything like it, and there won't be again in the years of generation after generation. A fire eats in front of them, and behind them a flame burns. The land in front of them is like the garden of Eden, and behind them a wrecked wilderness. And nothing gets away from them. They look like horses, and they run like horsemen. They jump on the tops of the mountains with a noise like chariots, like the noise of a flame of fire eating up stubble, like a strong people drawn up for battle. The peoples are in great pain at them. Every face goes pale. They run like strong men. They climb the wall like fighting men. And every one goes his own way, and they don't break their lines. And nobody shoves his brother. Every one walks in his own path. And when they fall on the sword, they aren't wounded. They run about in the town. They run on the wall. They climb up into the houses. They come in through the windows like a thief. The earth shakes in front of them. The sky trembles. The sun and the moon go dark, and the stars pull in their shining. And the Lord lets his voice go in front of his army, because his camp is very big. Because the one who does his word is strong. Because the day of the Lord is great and very terrifying. Who can stand it?

Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand; A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations. A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them. The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run. Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array. Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness. They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks: Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded. They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief. The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?

Tear your heart

Even now, says the Lord, turn back to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning. Tear your hearts and not your clothes. Turn back to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and full of kindness, and he relents from doing harm. Who knows? He may turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him — a grain offering and a drink offering for the Lord your God. Blow the trumpet in Zion. Call a fast. Call a special assembly. Gather the people. Set the gathering apart. Bring together the elders, gather the children and the babies at the breast. Let the groom come out of his room and the bride out of hers. Let the priests, the Lord's ministers, weep between the porch and the altar, and say: Spare your people, Lord. Do not make your inheritance a byword, something the nations rule over. Why should they say among the peoples, Where is their God? Then the Lord will be jealous for his land and take pity on his people. And the Lord will answer his people: Look, I will send you grain, new wine and oil, and you will have enough. I will no longer make you an object of scorn among the nations. I will drive the northern army far away from you, into a barren and desolate land, its face toward the east sea and its rear toward the utmost sea. Its stench will go up and its foul smell will rise, because it has done great things.

Even now, says the Lord, come back to me with your whole heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning. And tear your heart and not your clothes, and turn back to the Lord your God. Because he's gracious and full of mercy, slow to anger and full of faithful love, and sorry about doing harm. Who knows if he'll turn round and be sorry, and leave a blessing behind him — a grain offering and a drink offering for the Lord your God? Blow the trumpet in Zion. Set a fast apart. Call a solemn gathering. Gather the people. Set the gathering apart. Bring the elders together. Gather the children and the ones still at the breast. Let the bridegroom come out of his room and the bride out of her chamber. Let the priests, the servants of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar. And let them say: Spare your people, Lord, and don't hand your inheritance over to insults, so the nations rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples: Where's their God? Then the Lord will be jealous for his land and feel for his people. Yes, the Lord will answer and say to his people: Look — I'll send you grain and new wine and oil, and you'll have your fill of it. And I won't make you an insult among the nations any more. But I'll send the one from the north far away from you and drive him into a dry and wrecked land, with his front towards the eastern sea and his back towards the sea at the back. And his stink will come up and his rotten smell will come up, because he's done big things.

Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God? Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly: Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet. Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God? Then will the LORD be jealous for his land, and pity his people. Yea, the LORD will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen: But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.

12

Even now, says the Lord, turn back to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.

Plain English

Even now, says the Lord, come back to me with your whole heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.

Plain English

Who knows if he'll turn round and be sorry, and leave a blessing behind him — a grain offering and a drink offering for the Lord your God?

King James Version, 1611

Plain English

King James Version, 1611

Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.

17

Let the priests, the Lord's ministers, weep between the porch and the altar, and say: Spare your people, Lord. Do not make your inheritance a byword, something the nations rule over. Why should they say among the peoples, Where is their God?

Plain English

Let the priests, the servants of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar. And let them say: Spare your people, Lord, and don't hand your inheritance over to insults, so the nations rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples: Where's their God?

King James Version, 1611

Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?

18

Then the Lord will be jealous for his land and take pity on his people.

Plain English

Then the Lord will be jealous for his land and feel for his people.

King James Version, 1611

Then will the LORD be jealous for his land, and pity his people.

19

And the Lord will answer his people: Look, I will send you grain, new wine and oil, and you will have enough. I will no longer make you an object of scorn among the nations.

Plain English

Yes, the Lord will answer and say to his people: Look — I'll send you grain and new wine and oil, and you'll have your fill of it. And I won't make you an insult among the nations any more.

King James Version, 1611

Yea, the LORD will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:

20

I will drive the northern army far away from you, into a barren and desolate land, its face toward the east sea and its rear toward the utmost sea. Its stench will go up and its foul smell will rise, because it has done great things.

Plain English

But I'll send the one from the north far away from you and drive him into a dry and wrecked land, with his front towards the eastern sea and his back towards the sea at the back. And his stink will come up and his rotten smell will come up, because he's done big things.

King James Version, 1611

But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.

I'll pour out my Spirit

Don't be afraid, land. Be glad and rejoice, for the Lord will do great things. Don't be afraid, animals of the field, for the open pastures are greening up, the tree is bearing its fruit, and the fig and the vine are yielding their best. Be glad then, children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God, for he has given you the former rain in due measure. He will send down the rain for you — the former rain and the latter rain in the first month. The threshing floors will be full of wheat, and the vats will overflow with new wine and oil. And I will restore to you the years the locust has eaten — the cankerworm, the caterpillar and the palmerworm — my great army that I sent among you. You will eat your fill and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wonderfully with you. And my people will never be put to shame. And you will know that I am among the people of Israel, that I am the Lord your God and there is no other. And my people will never be put to shame. And afterwards I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. And in those days I will pour out my Spirit even on servants, both men and women. And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth: blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. On Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be rescue, as the Lord has said, among the survivors the Lord calls.

Don't be frightened, land. Be glad and celebrate, because the Lord will do big things. Don't be frightened, you animals of the field, because the pastures of the wilderness are green. Because the tree gives its fruit, and the fig tree and the vine give their strength. So be glad, you people of Zion, and celebrate in the Lord your God. Because he's given you the early rain in the right measure, and he'll make the rain come down for you, the early rain and the late rain, in the first month. And the threshing floors will be full of wheat, and the vats will overflow with new wine and oil. And I'll give you back the years the locust ate — the hopping locust and the destroying locust and the cutting locust, my great army that I sent among you. And you'll eat plenty and have your fill, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who's dealt wonderfully with you. And my people will never be ashamed. And you'll know that I'm in the middle of Israel, and that I'm the Lord your God and there's nobody else. And my people will never be ashamed. And it'll happen after that, that I'll pour out my Spirit on all flesh. And your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions. And in those days I'll pour out my Spirit on the servants and the servant women too. And I'll show wonders in the heavens and on the earth — blood and fire and pillars of smoke. The sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, before the great and terrifying day of the Lord comes. And whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Because on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there'll be ones who get away, the way the Lord has said, and among the ones left that the Lord calls.

Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the LORD will do great things. Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength. Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month. And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.
