Run for it

Run for it, people of Benjamin, out of Jerusalem. Blow the trumpet in Tekoa and set up the signal on Beth Hakkerem. Because trouble is looking out of the north, and a great destruction. I've compared the daughter of Zion to a lovely and delicate woman. Shepherds with their flocks will come to her. They'll pitch their tents against her all round. They'll graze it out, each man in his own patch. Get ready for war against her. Rise and let's go up at noon. We're done for, because the day is going and the evening shadows are stretching out. Rise and let's go up at night and destroy her palaces. Because this is what the LORD Almighty says: Cut down the trees and throw up a ramp against Jerusalem. This is the city to be dealt with. There's nothing but oppression within her. The way a well keeps its water fresh, that's how she keeps her wickedness fresh. Violence and ruin are what you hear in her. Sickness and wounds are before me all the time. Take the warning, Jerusalem, or my soul will pull away from you and I'll make you a desolation, a land nobody lives in. This is what the LORD Almighty says: They'll glean the survivors of Israel like a vine. Put your hand back over the branches like a grape picker. Who can I speak to and warn so they'll listen? Look: their ear is uncircumcised and they can't pay attention. Look: the word of the LORD is something they sneer at. They take no pleasure in it. So I'm full of the fury of the LORD. I'm worn out holding it in. Pour it out on the children in the street and on the gathering of young men together. Because even the husband and the wife will be taken, the old man and the one full of years. And their houses will be handed over to others, along with their fields and their wives together. Because I'll stretch out my hand over the people of the land, declares the LORD. Because from the least of them to the greatest, every one of them is greedy for gain, and from prophet to priest, every one of them deals falsely. They've patched up the fracture of the daughter of my people lightly, saying, Peace, peace — and there's no peace. Were they ashamed when they did the disgusting thing? No — they weren't ashamed at all and they didn't know how to blush. So they'll fall among the fallen. When I deal with them they'll be brought down, says the LORD.

Run for it, people of Benjamin, out of the middle of Jerusalem. Blow the trumpet in Tekoa and set up the signal on Beth Hakkerem. Because trouble is looking out of the north, and a great smash. Get up and let's go up at night and wreck her palaces. Because this is what the Lord Almighty says: Cut down the trees and throw up a ramp against Jerusalem. This is the town to be dealt with. There's nothing but oppression in the middle of her. The way a well keeps its water fresh, that's how she keeps her wickedness fresh. Violence and ruin are what you hear in her. Sickness and wounds are in front of me all the time. Take the warning, Jerusalem, or my soul will pull away from you and I'll make you a wreck, a land nobody lives in. This is what the Lord Almighty says: They'll glean what's left of Israel like a vine. Put your hand back over the branches like a grape picker. Who can I speak to and warn so they'll listen? Look — their ear is uncircumcised and they can't pay attention. Look — the word of the Lord is something they sneer at. They take no pleasure in it. So I'm full of the fury of the Lord. No — they weren't ashamed at all and they didn't know how to blush. So they'll fall among the fallen. When I deal with them they'll be brought down, says the Lord.

O ye children of Benjamin, gather yourselves to flee out of the midst of Jerusalem, and blow the trumpet in Tekoa, and set up a sign of fire in Bethhaccerem: for evil appeareth out of the north, and great destruction. I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate woman. The shepherds with their flocks shall come unto her; they shall pitch their tents against her round about; they shall feed every one in his place. Prepare ye war against her; arise, and let us go up at noon. Woe unto us! for the day goeth away, for the shadows of the evening are stretched out. Arise, and let us go by night, and let us destroy her palaces. For thus hath the LORD of hosts said, Hew ye down trees, and cast a mount against Jerusalem: this is the city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her. As a fountain casteth out her waters, so she casteth out her wickedness: violence and spoil is heard in her; before me continually is grief and wounds. Be thou instructed, O Jerusalem, lest my soul depart from thee; lest I make thee desolate, a land not inhabited. Thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall throughly glean the remnant of Israel as a vine: turn back thine hand as a grapegatherer into the baskets. To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it. Therefore I am full of the fury of the LORD; I am weary with holding in: I will pour it out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of young men together: for even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days. And their houses shall be turned unto others, with their fields and wives together: for I will stretch out my hand upon the inhabitants of the land, saith the LORD. For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace. Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.

Ask for the old paths

This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the old paths — where the good way is — then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” But they said, “We will not walk in it.” And I set watchmen over you: Listen to the sound of the trumpet. But they said: We won't listen. So listen, you nations, and know, you gathering, what's coming to them. Hear, earth. I am bringing evil on this people — the fruit of their own thoughts — because they have not listened to my words, and they have rejected my law. What's the point of frankincense coming to me from Sheba and sweet cane from a far country? Your burnt offerings aren't acceptable and your sacrifices don't please me. This is what the LORD says: “I will lay stumbling blocks before this people, and fathers and sons together will fall over them. Neighbour and friend will perish.” This is what the LORD says: Look: a people is coming from the land of the north, a great nation stirred up from the far parts of the earth. They take hold of bow and spear. They're cruel and they show no mercy. Their voice roars like the sea, and they ride on horses, drawn up like a man for the battle against you, daughter of Zion. We've heard about them and our hands have gone limp. Trouble has taken hold of us, pain like a woman in labour. Don't go out into the field and don't walk on the road, because the enemy has a sword. Terror is everywhere you look. Daughter of my people, put on coarse mourning cloth and roll in ashes. Mourn like it's an only son, a bitter howling. Because the destroyer will come on us suddenly. I've made you a tester among my people, an assayer, so you'd know and test their way. They're all stubborn rebels who go around spreading slander. They're like bronze and iron — rotten to the core. The bellows are burnt and the lead is used up by the fire. The refiner refines for nothing, because the bad isn't pulled out. They'll be called rejected silver, because the LORD has rejected them.

This is what the Lord says: Stand by the roads and look, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it, and you'll find rest for your souls. But they said: We won't walk in it. And I set watchmen over you: Listen to the sound of the trumpet. But they said: We won't listen. So listen, you nations, and know, you gathering, what's coming to them. Listen, earth. Look — I'm bringing trouble on this people, the fruit of their own thoughts. Because they haven't paid attention to my words, and as for my teaching, they've knocked it back. What's the point of frankincense coming to me from Sheba and sweet cane from a far country? Your burnt offerings aren't acceptable and your sacrifices don't please me. So this is what the Lord says: Look — I'm laying stumbling blocks in front of this people, and fathers and sons together will trip over them. Neighbour and mate will be finished. This is what the Lord says: Look — a people is coming from the land of the north, a great nation stirred up from the far parts of the earth. Daughter of my people, put on sackcloth and roll in ashes. Mourn like it's an only son, a bitter howling. Because the wrecker will come on us suddenly. I've made you a tester among my people, an assayer, so you'd know and test their way. They're all hard rebels, going about with slander. They're bronze and iron. Every one of them is a wrecker. The bellows are burnt and the lead is used up by the fire. The refiner refines for nothing, because the bad isn't pulled out. They'll be called rejected silver, because the Lord has rejected them.

Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken. Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them. Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it. To what purpose cometh there to me incense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me. Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will lay stumblingblocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbour and his friend shall perish. Thus saith the LORD, Behold, a people cometh from the north country, and a great nation shall be raised from the sides of the earth. They shall lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and they ride upon horses, set in array as men for war against thee, O daughter of Zion. We have heard the fame thereof: our hands wax feeble: anguish hath taken hold of us, and pain, as of a woman in travail. Go not forth into the field, nor walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy and fear is on every side. O daughter of my people, gird thee with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: make thee mourning, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation: for the spoiler shall suddenly come upon us. I have set thee for a tower and a fortress among my people, that thou mayest know and try their way. They are all grievous revolters, walking with slanders: they are brass and iron; they are all corrupters. The bellows are burned, the lead is consumed of the fire; the founder melteth in vain: for the wicked are not plucked away. Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the LORD hath rejected them.

King James Version, 1611

Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it.

20

King James Version, 1611

To what purpose cometh there to me incense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me.
