A wrecking wind

This is what the LORD says: “I will raise up against Babylon, and against those who live in the middle of those who rise up against me, a destroying wind. And I'll send winnowers to Babylon, and they'll winnow her and empty her land. Because they'll be against her all round on the day of trouble. Let the archer bend his bow against the one who draws his, and against the one who stands up in his armour. Don't spare her young men. Wipe out her whole army. People will fall dead in the land of the Chaldeans, and others will be run through in her streets. Because Israel and Judah haven't been left widowed by their God, the LORD Almighty — though their land was full of wrongdoing against the Holy One of Israel. Run out of Babylon, and let each person save their own life. Don't be swept away with her wrongdoing. This is the time of the LORD's vengeance; he's giving her what she's earned. Babylon was a golden cup in the LORD’s hand that made all the earth drunk. The nations drank her wine; so the nations went mad. Babylon has fallen suddenly and been broken. Howl over her. Get balm for her pain — maybe she can be healed. We'd have healed Babylon, and she isn't healed. Leave her and let's go, each man to his own country. Because her judgment reaches up to the heavens and is lifted as high as heaven. The LORD has brought forth our righteousness. Come, and let us declare in Zion the work of the LORD our God. Sharpen the arrows. Take up the shields. The LORD has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes, because his plan against Babylon is to destroy her. Because it's the LORD's vengeance, the vengeance for his temple. Raise the signal on the walls of Babylon. Make the watch strong. Set up the lookouts. Get the ambush ready. Because the LORD has both planned and done what he spoke against the people of Babylon. You who live on many waters, abundant in treasures, your end has come — the measure of your greed. The LORD Almighty has sworn by himself: I'll fill you with men like locusts, and they'll raise a shout over you. He made the earth by his strength. He set up the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. When he lets his voice go, there's a roar of waters in the heavens. He makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses. Every man is thick with no knowledge. Every goldsmith is shamed by his carved image. Because what he cast is a lie, and there's no breath in it. They're nothing, work fit for a laugh. When they're dealt with, they'll be finished. The portion of Jacob isn't like these, because he's the one who shaped everything, and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance. The LORD Almighty is his name. You're my hammer and my weapons of war. With you I'll break nations, and with you I'll destroy kingdoms. With you I'll break horse and rider. With you I'll break chariot and driver. With you I'll break man and woman. With you I'll break old and young. With you I'll break young man and young woman. With you I'll break the shepherd and his flock. With you I'll break the farmer and his team. With you I'll break governors and officials. And I'll pay back Babylon and everyone living in Chaldea for all the wickedness they did in Zion, right before your eyes, declares the LORD.

This is what the Lord says: Look — I'll stir up a wrecking wind against Babylon and against the people living in Leb Kamai. And I'll send winnowers to Babylon, and they'll winnow her and empty her land. Because they'll be against her all round on the day of trouble. Let the archer bend his bow against the one who bends, and against the one who lifts himself up in his armour. Don't spare her young men. Finish off her whole army. So the killed will fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and the ones run through in her streets. Because Israel and Judah haven't been left widowed by their God, the Lord Almighty — though their land was full of wrongdoing against the Holy One of Israel. Run out of the middle of Babylon, and let each man save his own soul. Don't be cut off in her wrongdoing. Because this is the time of the Lord's settling up. He's paying her back what she deserves. Babylon was a gold cup in the Lord's hand that made the whole earth drunk. The nations drank her wine, and that's why the nations have gone mad. Babylon has fallen suddenly and been broken. Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against me, a destroying wind; And will send unto Babylon fanners, that shall fan her, and shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about. Against him that bendeth let the archer bend his bow, and against him that lifteth himself up in his brigandine: and spare ye not her young men; destroy ye utterly all her host. The destroying mountain

Look: I'm against you, you destroying mountain, declares the LORD, who destroys the whole earth. And I'll stretch out my hand over you and roll you down off the crags and make you a burnt-out mountain. And they won't take a stone from you for a corner or a stone for foundations. You'll be a desolation forever, declares the LORD. Raise a signal in the land. Blow the trumpet among the nations. Set the nations apart against her. Call the kingdoms against her — Ararat and Minni and Ashkenaz. Appoint a commander against her. Bring up horses like bristling locusts. Set the nations apart against her — the kings of the Medes, their governors and all their officials, and every land under their rule. And the land shakes and writhes. Because every plan of the LORD against Babylon stands — to make the land of Babylon a desolation with nobody living in it. Babylon's strong men have stopped fighting. They've stayed in their strongholds. Their strength has failed. They've turned into women. They've burnt her homes. Her bars are broken. One runner runs to meet another and one messenger to meet another, to tell the king of Babylon that his city is taken from end to end, That the crossings are seized and the reed beds burnt with fire, and the fighting men are falling apart. Because this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time it's trodden. In a little while the time of her harvest will come. “Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon has devoured me and crushed me. He's made me an empty vessel, swallowed me like a sea monster, filled his belly with my delicacies and thrown me out.” Let the violence done to me and my flesh be on Babylon, the one living in Zion will say. And let my blood be on the people of Chaldea, Jerusalem will say. So this is what the LORD says: Look: I'll take up your case and take vengeance for you. And I'll dry up her sea and make her spring dry. Babylon will become heaps of rubble, a home for jackals, a horror people hiss at, with nobody living there. They'll roar together like lions. They'll growl like lion cubs. When they're heated up, I'll set out their drinks and make them drunk, so they can be merry and sleep an everlasting sleep and not wake up, declares the LORD. I'll bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with he-goats. How Sheshach is taken! How the praise of the whole earth is seized! How Babylon has become an astonishment among the nations! The sea has come up over Babylon. She's covered with the crowd of its waves. Her cities are a horror, a dry land and a desert, a land nobody lives in and no son of man goes through. And I'll deal with Bel in Babylon, and bring out of his mouth what he swallowed. The nations won't stream to him any more. Even the wall of Babylon will fall. Come out of her, my people, and let each man save his own soul from the fierce anger of the LORD. And don't let your heart go weak and don't be frightened at the news heard in the land. One year the news comes, and after that in another year the news, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler. So look: the days are coming when I'll deal with the carved images of Babylon. And her whole land will be ashamed, and all those killed there will fall within her. Then the heavens and the earth and everything in them will sing over Babylon. Because the destroyers will come to her out of the north, declares the LORD.

Look — I'm against you, you destroying mountain, declares the Lord, who wrecks the whole earth. And I'll stretch out my hand over you and roll you down off the crags and make you a burnt-out mountain. And they won't take a stone from you for a corner or a stone for foundations. You'll be a wreck forever, declares the Lord. Raise a signal in the land. Blow the trumpet among the nations. Set the nations apart against her. Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has eaten me and crushed me. He's made me an empty pot. He's swallowed me like a sea monster. He's filled his belly with what I liked and thrown me out. Let the violence done to me and my flesh be on Babylon, the one living in Zion will say. And let my blood be on the people of Chaldea, Jerusalem will say. So this is what the Lord says: Look — I'll take up your case and settle up for you. And I'll dry up her sea and make her spring dry. And Babylon will be heaps of rubble, a home for jackals, a horror and something people hiss at, with nobody living there. They'll roar together like lions. They'll growl like lion cubs. Behold, I am against thee, O destroying mountain, saith the LORD, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain. And they shall not take of thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations; but thou shalt be desolate for ever, saith the LORD. Set ye up a standard in the land, blow the trumpet among the nations, prepare the nations against her, call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashchenaz; appoint a captain against her; cause the horses to come up as the rough caterpillers. Prepare against her the nations with the kings of the Medes, the captains thereof, and all the rulers thereof, and all the land of his dominion. And the land shall tremble and sorrow: for every purpose of the LORD shall be performed against Babylon, to make the land of Babylon a desolation without an inhabitant. The mighty men of Babylon have forborn to fight, they have remained in their holds: their might hath failed; they became as women: they have burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken. One post shall run to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to shew the king of Babylon that his city is taken at one end, And that the passages are stopped, and the reeds they have burned with fire, and the men of war are affrighted. For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; The daughter of Babylon is like a threshingfloor, it is time to thresh her: yet a little while, and the time of her harvest shall come. Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon hath devoured me, he hath crushed me, he hath made me an empty vessel, he hath swallowed me up like a dragon, he hath filled his belly with my delicates, he hath cast me out. The violence done to me and to my flesh be upon Babylon, shall the inhabitant of Zion say; and my blood upon the inhabitants of Chaldea, shall Jerusalem say. Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will plead thy cause, and take vengeance for thee; and I will dry up her sea, and make her springs dry. And Babylon shall become heaps, a dwellingplace for dragons, an astonishment, and an hissing, without an inhabitant. They shall roar together like lions: they shall yell as lions’ whelps. In their heat I will make their feasts, and I will make them drunken, that they may rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the LORD. I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with he goats. How is Sheshach taken! and how is the praise of the whole earth surprised! how is Babylon become an astonishment among the nations! The sea is come up upon Babylon: she is covered with the multitude of the waves thereof. Her cities are a desolation, a dry land, and a wilderness, a land wherein no man dwelleth, neither doth any son of man pass thereby. And I will punish Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed up: and the nations shall not flow together any more unto him: yea, the wall of Babylon shall fall. My people, go ye out of the midst of her, and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger of the LORD. And lest your heart faint, and ye fear for the rumour that shall be heard in the land; a rumour shall both come one year, and after that in another year shall come a rumour, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler. Therefore, behold, the days come, that I will do judgment upon the graven images of Babylon: and her whole land shall be confounded, and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her. Then the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, shall sing for Babylon: for the spoilers shall come unto her from the north, saith the LORD.

The book in the river

Just as Babylon caused Israelites to fall, so people from all over the earth will fall at Babylon. You who got away from the sword, go, don't stand about. Remember the LORD from far off, and let Jerusalem come into your mind. We're ashamed, because we've heard the insults. Shame has covered our faces, because strangers have come into the holy places of the LORD's house. So look: the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I'll deal with her carved images. And the wounded will groan through the whole of her land. Even if Babylon goes up to heaven and makes the height of her strength strong, the destroyers will come to her from me, declares the LORD. The sound of a cry from Babylon, and a great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans. Because the LORD is destroying Babylon and putting an end to the great voice out of her. And their waves roar like many waters, and the noise of their voice goes out. Because the destroyer has come on her, on Babylon. Her strong men are taken. Every one of their bows is broken. Because the LORD is a God who pays back — he'll definitely pay back. And I'll make her officials and her wise men drunk, her governors and her officers and her strong men. And they'll sleep an everlasting sleep and not wake up, declares the King — the LORD Almighty is his name. This is what the LORD Almighty says: The wide walls of Babylon will be pulled right down, and her high gates will be burnt with fire. And the peoples will have worked for nothing, and the nations for the fire, and they'll be worn out. The word Jeremiah the prophet ordered Seraiah son of Neriah son of Maaseiah, when he went with Zedekiah king of Judah to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. Seraiah was the quartermaster. And Jeremiah wrote in one book all the trouble that would come on Babylon — all these words written against Babylon. And Jeremiah said to Seraiah: When you come to Babylon, see that you read all these words out loud. And say: Lord, you've spoken against this place, to cut it off so nothing lives in it, man or beast, but it's a desolation forever. And when you've finished reading this book, tie a stone to it and throw it into the middle of the Euphrates. And say: That's how Babylon will sink and not rise again, because of the trouble I'm bringing on her, and they'll be worn out. Up to here are the words of Jeremiah.

Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.
