Faithless Israel, treacherous Judah
They say, If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, will he go back to her again? Wouldn't that land be badly polluted? But you have prostituted yourself with many lovers — yet return to me, says the LORD. Lift your eyes to the bare heights and have a look. Where haven't you been had? You sat by the roads waiting for them like an Arab in the desert. You've polluted the land with your prostitution and your wickedness. So the showers have been held back and there has been no latter rain. You have the brazen look of a prostitute; you refuse to be ashamed. Will you not from this time cry to me, “My father, you are the guide of my youth”? Will he stay angry forever? Will he keep it up to the end? That's how you talk, and you do all the wrong you can, and you escape with it. The LORD said to me in the days of King Josiah: Have you seen what faithless Israel has done? She's gone up every high mountain and under every green tree, and played the prostitute there. And I said, after she'd done all that, Return to me — and she didn't come back. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it. And I saw that when faithless Israel committed adultery, I sent her away and gave her a certificate of divorce for the whole lot of it. But her treacherous sister Judah wasn't frightened — she went off and played the prostitute too. And because she treated her prostitution so lightly, she polluted the land and committed adultery with stone and wood. And for all that, her treacherous sister Judah hasn't return to me with her whole heart, only for show, declares the LORD.
