The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin. The LORD spoke to him in the days of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. It came again in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, through to the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah, king of Judah, until Jerusalem was carried off in the fifth month. Then the LORD spoke to me: Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you came out of the womb, I set you apart and appointed you a prophet to the nations. Then I said, “Ah, Lord GOD! I don’t know how to speak — I’m only a child.” But the LORD said to me, “Don’t say, ‘I’m only a child.’ You will go to everyone I send you to, and you will say whatever I command you. Don’t be afraid of their faces, because I am with you to deliver you,” says the LORD. Then the LORD reached out his hand and touched my mouth. The LORD said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I have set you over nations and kingdoms: to root out and pull down, to destroy and throw down, to build and to plant.”

The almond branch and the boiling pot

And the LORD spoke to me: What do you see, Jeremiah? And I said: I see a branch off an almond tree. Then the LORD said to me: You've seen it right, because I'm watching over my word to do it. And the LORD spoke to me a second time: What do you see? And I said: I see a pot on the boil, tipping this way from the north. Then the LORD said to me: Out of the north the trouble will boil over on everyone living in the land. Because look: I'm calling all the families of the kingdoms of the north, declares the LORD. They'll come and each one will set his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, against all her walls round about and against all the cities of Judah. And I'll speak my judgments against them for all their wickedness, because they've walked out on me and burnt incense to other gods and bowed down to what their own hands made. So brace yourself. Stand up and tell them everything I command you. Do not be dismayed by them, or I will make you dismayed before them. Because look: today I've made you a fortified city and an iron pillar and bronze walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah and its officials, its priests and the people of the land. They'll fight you and they won't beat you, because I'm with you to deliver you, declares the LORD.

Because look — I'm calling all the families of the kingdoms of the north, declares the Lord. They'll come and each one will set his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, against all her walls round about and against all the towns of Judah. And I'll speak my judgments against them for all their wickedness, because they've walked out on me and burnt incense to other gods and bowed down to what their own hands made. So get yourself ready. Stand up and tell them everything I order you. Don't fall apart in front of them, or I'll break you apart in front of them. Because look — today I've made you a fortified town and an iron pillar and bronze walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah and its officials, its priests and the people of the land. They'll fight you and they won't beat you, because I'm with you to get you out of it, declares the Lord.

Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree. And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is toward the north. Then the LORD said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land. For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah. And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands. Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them. For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.
