Get down in the dust

Get down and sit in the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon. Sit on the ground with no throne, daughter of the Chaldeans. Because you won't be called soft and delicate any more. Take the millstones and grind flour. Take off your veil. Pull up your skirt, bare your leg, wade through the rivers. Your nakedness will be uncovered and your shame will be seen. I'll take vengeance and I won't meet you as a man. Our redeemer — the LORD Almighty is his name — the Holy One of Israel. Sit in silence and go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans, because you will no longer be called the lady of kingdoms. I was angry with my people. I let my inheritance be treated as common and handed them over to you. You showed them no mercy. Even on the old you laid your yoke very heavy. And you said, I'll be the mistress forever — so that you never took these things to heart or thought about how it would end.

Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate. Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers. Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man. As for our redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel. Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms. I was wroth with my people, I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke. And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it.

You said, Nobody sees me

Now hear this, you who are given to pleasures and live carelessly, who say in your heart, ‘I am, and there is none beside me. I will not sit as a widow or know the loss of children.’ But these two things will come on you in a moment, in one day: the loss of children and widowhood. They will come on you in their fullness for the multitude of your sorceries and the great abundance of your enchantments. You trusted in your wickedness and said, ‘Nobody sees me.’ Your wisdom and knowledge have perverted you, and you said in your heart, ‘I am, and there is none beside me.’ So evil will come on you, and you won't know where it comes from. Mischief will fall on you, and you won't be able to put it off. Desolation will come on you suddenly, which you will not know. Stand now with your enchantments and the multitude of your sorceries, which you have laboured in from your youth. Perhaps you may be able to profit; perhaps you may prevail. You're worn out with all your advice. Let the men who map the heavens stand up and save you — the stargazers, those who work out month by month what's coming to you. they'll be as stubble; the fire will burn them. They won't deliver themselves from the power of the flame. There won't be a coal to warm at, nor a fire to sit before. That's what they've turned into for you, those you worked with, those you traded with since you were young. They've wandered off, each his own way, and there's nobody to save you.

So listen to this now, you who love a good time and sit there feeling safe, saying in your heart, I'm the one and there's nobody besides me. I'll never sit as a widow or know what it is to lose children. Both those things will come on you in a moment, in a single day — losing your children and being widowed. They'll come on you in full, for all your sorceries and all your powerful spells. You felt safe in your wickedness. You said, Nobody sees me. Your wisdom and your knowledge have turned you round, and you said in your heart, I'm the one and there's nobody besides me. So trouble will come on you and you won't know how to charm it away. Disaster will fall on you and you won't be able to buy it off. Ruin will come on you suddenly, before you know it. Stand there with your spells and all your sorceries, the ones you've worked at since you were young. Maybe you'll get somewhere. Maybe you'll frighten someone off. You're worn out with all your advice. Let the men who map the heavens stand up and save you — the stargazers, the ones who work out month by month what's coming to you. Look at them — they're stubble. The fire burns them up. They can't save themselves out of the flame. There's no coal to warm yourself at, no fire to sit in front of. That's what they've turned into for you, the ones you worked with, the ones you traded with since you were young. They've wandered off, each his own way, and there's nobody to save you.

Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children: But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments. For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me. Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know. Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail. Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee. Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it. Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.
