Look at my servant

Look at my servant, whom I uphold; my chosen one, in whom my soul delights. I've put my spirit on him. He'll bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. He won't cry out or raise his voice, or make it heard in the street. A bruised reed he won't break, and smoking flax he won't quench. He'll bring forth judgment to truth. He won't fail or be discouraged until he has established judgment in the earth, and the islands will wait for his law. This is what God the LORD says — he who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk there: ‘I the LORD have called you in righteousness. I'll hold your hand, keep you, and give you as a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open blind eyes, bring prisoners out of the prison, and those who sit in darkness out of the prison house. I am the LORD. That is my name. I will not give my glory to another, nor my praise to carved idols. the former things have come to pass, and I declare new things. Before they spring up, I tell you about them.’

Look at my servant, the one I hold up, my chosen one, the one my soul delights in. I've put my Spirit on him and he'll bring justice out to the nations. He won't shout or raise his voice or let it be heard in the street. A bruised reed he won't break, and a smoking wick he won't put out. He'll bring justice out faithfully. He won't burn out or be crushed until he's set justice in the earth, and the islands will wait for his teaching. This is what God the Lord says — the one who made the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and everything that comes out of it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk on it: I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness. I'll take hold of your hand and keep you, and give you as a covenant for the people, as a light for the nations — to open blind eyes, to bring the prisoner out of the lock-up and those sitting in darkness out of the cell. I am the Lord. That's my name. I won't give my glory to anyone else, or my praise to carved images. Look — the first things have come about, and now I'm telling you new things. Before they spring up, I'm telling you.

Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law. Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.

A new song

Sing to the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth — you who go down to the sea and all that is in it, the islands and their people. Let the wilderness and its cities lift up their voices, and the settlements where Kedar lives. Let the people of Sela sing. Let them shout from the mountain tops. Let them give glory to the LORD and tell his praise in the islands. The LORD will go out like a mighty man. He'll stir himself up like a fighting man. He'll shout, he'll raise the war cry, he'll show his strength against his enemies. I've kept quiet a long time. I've held still and held myself back. Now I'll cry out like a woman in labour. I'll gasp and pant all at once. I'll lay waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their growth. I'll turn the rivers into islands and dry up the pools. I'll bring the blind by a way they didn't know and lead them in paths they haven't known. I'll make darkness light before them and crooked things straight. These things I will do for them, and I will not abandon them. They'll be turned right back and utterly ashamed — those who trust in carved images, who say to cast idols, You're our gods.

These are the things I'll do for them, and I won't leave them. They'll be turned right back and utterly ashamed — the ones who trust in carved images, who say to cast idols, You're our gods.

Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof. Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit: let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains. Let them give glory unto the LORD, and declare his praise in the islands. The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies. I have long time holden my peace; I have been still, and refrained myself: now will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy and devour at once. I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools. And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them. They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye are our gods.

Deaf and blind

Hear, you deaf; and look, you blind, so that you may see. Who is blind but my servant, or deaf like the messenger I sent? Who is blind as he who is perfect, and blind as the LORD's servant? Seeing many things, but you don't observe them; opening the ears, but you don't hear. The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law and make it honourable. But this is a people robbed and plundered. They are all trapped in holes and hidden in prisons. They are prey, and no one rescues them; loot, and no one says, “Give it back.” Who among you will listen to this? Who'll pay attention and hear it for the time to come? Who handed Jacob over to the looters and Israel to the robbers? Wasn't it the LORD — the one we sinned against? They wouldn't follow his ways and they wouldn't listen to his teaching. So he poured out on him the heat of his anger and the strength of battle. It set him alight all round and he still didn't understand. It burnt him and he didn't take it to heart.

Listen, you deaf. Look and see, you blind. Who's blind but my servant, or deaf like the messenger I send? Who's blind like the one at peace with me, blind like the servant of the Lord? You see plenty and take no notice. Your ears are open and you don't hear. The Lord was pleased for his righteousness' sake to make the teaching great and glorious. But this is a people robbed and stripped. Every one of them is trapped in holes and hidden away in lock-ups. They're plunder with nobody to rescue them, loot with nobody saying, Hand them back. Who among you will listen to this? Who'll pay attention and hear it for the time to come? Who handed Jacob over to the looters and Israel to the robbers? Wasn't it the Lord — the one we sinned against? They wouldn't walk in his ways and they wouldn't listen to his teaching. So he poured out on him the heat of his anger and the strength of battle. It set him alight all round and he still didn't understand. It burnt him and he didn't take it to heart.

Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see. Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the LORD’s servant? Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not. The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable. But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivereth; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore. Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken and hear for the time to come? Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the LORD, he against whom we have sinned? for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law. Therefore he hath poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.
