The anger against the nations

Come near, you nations, and listen. Pay attention, you peoples. Let the earth hear, and everything in it, the world and everything that comes out of it. Because the LORD is angry with all the nations and furious with all their armies. He's marked them for destruction and handed them over to the slaughter. Their dead will be thrown out and the stink will go up from their bodies, and the mountains will run with their blood. The whole host of heaven will rot away. The sky will roll up like a scroll and all its host will drop, the way leaves drop off the vine and figs drop off the fig tree. For my sword will be bathed in heaven. It will come down on Idumea, and on the people of my curse, for judgment. The sword of the LORD is filled with blood and made fat with fatness — with the blood of lambs and goats and the fat of rams' kidneys. The LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah and a great slaughter in the land of Idumea. The wild oxen will come down with them, and the young bulls with the bulls. Their land will be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness. Because it's a day of the LORD's vengeance, a year of settling accounts for Zion's cause.

Look — it comes down on Edom, on the people I've marked out, for judgment. The sword of the Lord is covered in blood and greasy with fat — the blood of lambs and goats, the fat of rams' kidneys. Because the Lord has a sacrifice at Bozrah and a great slaughter in the land of Edom. The wild oxen will go down with them, the young bulls with the strong ones. Their land will be soaked with blood and their dust made greasy with fat. Because it's a day of the Lord's vengeance, a year of settling accounts for Zion's cause.

Come near, ye nations, to hear; and hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and all that is therein; the world, and all things that come forth of it. For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter. Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their carcases, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood. And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree. For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment. The sword of the LORD is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams: for the LORD hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Idumea. And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness. For it is the day of the LORD’s vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion.

Edom left to the wild

Edom's streams will turn into pitch and her dust into sulphur, and her land will turn into burning pitch. It won't go out night or day. Its smoke will go up forever. From one generation to the next it'll lie waste. Nobody will pass through it ever again. Pelicans and hedgehogs will take it over. Owls and ravens will live there. He'll stretch the measuring line of chaos over it and the plumb line of emptiness. There'll be no nobles left there to call up a kingdom, and all her princes will be nothing. Thorns will grow in her palaces, and nettles and brambles in her fortresses. It will become a home for jackals and a haunt for owls. Desert animals will meet hyenas there, and wild goats will call to each other. Night creatures will settle there and find a place to rest. There the great owl will make her nest, lay, hatch and gather under her shadow. There the vultures will also be gathered, each one with her mate. Seek out of the book of the LORD and read. Not one of these will fail; none will lack her mate, because my mouth has commanded it, and his spirit has gathered them. He's cast the lot for them, and his hand has measured out their share with the line. They'll own it forever and live there from one generation to the next.
