A king in righteousness

a king will reign in righteousness, and princes will rule in judgment. A man will be like a hiding place from the wind and a shelter from the storm, like rivers of water in a dry place and the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. The eyes of those who see won't be shut, and the ears of those who hear will listen. The mind of the rash will understand and know, and the stammering tongue will be quick to speak clearly. The fool won't be called noble any more, and the crook won't be spoken of as generous. For the vile person will speak villainy, and his heart will work wrongdoing — practising hypocrisy and speaking error against the LORD, leaving the hungry empty and causing the drink of the thirsty to fail. And the crook's tricks are evil. He works out schemes to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy is in the right. But the noble man plans noble things, and it's on noble things that he stands.

Look — a king will reign in righteousness, and rulers will rule with justice. And each of them will be like a hiding place from the wind and a shelter from the storm, like streams of water in a dry place, like the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. The eyes of those who see won't be shut, and the ears of those who hear will listen. The mind of the rash will understand and know, and the stammering tongue will be quick to speak clearly. The fool won't be called noble any more, and the crook won't be spoken of as generous. Because a fool talks foolishness and his heart works at wrong — doing godless things and talking rubbish about the Lord, leaving the hungry empty and keeping the drink from the thirsty. And the crook's tricks are evil. He works out schemes to wreck the poor with lying words, even when the needy is in the right. But the noble man plans noble things, and it's on noble things that he stands.

Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment. And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. And the eyes of them that see shall not be dim, and the ears of them that hear shall hearken. The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly. The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful. For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. The instruments also of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right. But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.

The women at ease

Rise, you women at ease, and hear my voice. You daughters who feel safe, listen to what I'm saying. For many days and years you'll be troubled, you careless women, because the vintage will fail and the gathering won't come. Tremble, you women at ease. Shake, you who feel safe. Strip yourselves and go bare, and put coarse mourning cloth round your waists. Beat your breasts for the good fields, for the fruitful vine, Thorns and briars will grow on the land of my people — yes, on all the houses of joy in the joyous city. Because the palace will be left empty and the noisy city deserted. The hill and the watchtower will be bare ground forever, a delight for wild donkeys and a pasture for flocks —

Get up, you women at ease, and hear my voice. You daughters who feel safe, listen to what I'm saying. In a bit over a year you'll be shaking, you women who feel safe. Because the grape harvest will fail and the fruit picking won't come. Tremble, you women at ease. Shake, you who feel safe. Strip yourselves and go bare, and put sackcloth round your waists. Beat your breasts for the good fields, for the fruitful vine, for the land of my people coming up with thorns and briars — yes, for all the happy houses in the town that liked a party. Because the palace will be left empty and the noisy town deserted. The hill and the watchtower will be bare ground forever, a delight for wild donkeys and a pasture for flocks —

Rise up, ye women that are at ease; hear my voice, ye careless daughters; give ear unto my speech. Many days and years shall ye be troubled, ye careless women: for the vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come. Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye careless ones: strip you, and make you bare, and gird sackcloth upon your loins. They shall lament for the teats, for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine. Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; yea, upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city: Because the palaces shall be forsaken; the multitude of the city shall be left; the forts and towers shall be for dens for ever, a joy of wild asses, a pasture of flocks;

The Spirit poured out

until the Spirit is poured on us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is counted as a forest. Then justice will live in the wilderness and righteousness will settle in the fruitful field. The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever. My people will live in a peaceful dwelling place, in secure dwellings and quiet resting places. Even when hail comes down on the forest and the city is laid right low. Blessed are you who sow beside all waters, sending out the feet of the ox and the donkey.

until the Spirit is poured out on us from above, and the wilderness turns into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is counted as scrub. Then justice will live in the wilderness and righteousness will settle in the fruitful field. And the work of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness quietness and confidence forever. And my people will live in a peaceful home, in safe houses, in quiet resting places — even when hail comes down on the forest and the town is laid right low. Good on you who sow beside every stream and let the ox and the donkey range free.

Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest. Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field. And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever. And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places; When it shall hail, coming down on the forest; and the city shall be low in a low place. Blessed are ye that sow beside all waters, that send forth thither the feet of the ox and the ass.
