And he gave the steward of his house his orders: Fill the men's sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put every man's money in the mouth of his sack. And put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one's sack, along with his grain money. And he did what Joseph told him. And as soon as it was light in the morning, the men were sent off, them and their donkeys. Then Judah came up to him and said: My lord, let your servant speak a word in my lord's ear, and don't let your anger burn against your servant. Because you are as Pharaoh. My lord asked his servants: Have you a father, or a brother? And we said to my lord: We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a young one. And his brother is dead, and he is the only one left of his mother, and his father loves him. And you said to your servants: Bring him down to me, so I can set my eyes on him. And we said to my lord: The boy cannot leave his father. If he left his father, his father would die. And you said to your servants: Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again. And when we went up to your servant my father, we told him what my lord had said. And our father said: Go back and buy us a little food. And we said: We cannot go down. If our youngest brother is with us, we will go. Because we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us. And your servant my father said to us: You know my wife bore me two sons. And one went out from me, and I said: He is torn to pieces for certain. And I have not seen him since. And if you take this one from me as well, and something happens to him, you will bring my grey hairs down to the grave in sorrow. So now, when I come to your servant my father and the boy is not with us — seeing his life is bound up in the boy's life — when he sees the boy is not with us, he will die. And your servants will bring the grey hairs of your servant our father down to the grave in sorrow. Because your servant stood good for the boy to my father, and said: If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame to my father forever. So now, let your servant stay here as my lord's slave in the boy's place, and let the boy go up with his brothers. Because how can I go up to my father with the boy not there? I could not bear to see what it would do to him.
