Genesis 34

Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had had for Jacob, went out to visit the women of the country.

And Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her. He took her and raped her.

And he was drawn to Dinah, Jacob's daughter. He was in love with the girl and spoke tenderly to her.

And Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as my wife.”

Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter Dinah, but his sons were out in the country with the stock, so he said nothing about it until they came in.

Then Hamor, Shechem's father, went out to talk with Jacob.

And Jacob's sons came in from the country as soon as they heard. They were shocked and furious, because Shechem had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by sleeping with Jacob's daughter — a thing that shouldn't be done.

But Hamor said to them, “My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Give her to him as his wife.

Intermarry with us. Give us your daughters, and take ours for yourselves.

You can live among us. The land's open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and take property in it.”

And Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, “Let me find favour with you, and I'll give you whatever you ask.

Name the bride price and the gift as high as you like, and I'll pay whatever you say. Just give me the girl as my wife.”

But Jacob's sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully, because Shechem had defiled their sister Dinah.

And they said to them, “We can't do that. We can't give our sister to a man who isn't circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us.

We'll only agree on one condition: that you become like us, by circumcising every male among you.

Then we'll give you our daughters and take yours for ourselves. We'll live among you and become one people with you.

But if you won't agree to be circumcised, we'll take our sister and go.”

What they said seemed good to Hamor and to his son Shechem.

And the young man, who was the most respected of anyone in his father's household, didn't waste any time doing what they'd said, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter.

So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of the city.

“These men are friendly toward us,” they said. “Let them live in our land and trade in it. There's plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and give them ours.

But the men will only agree to live with us and become one people on this condition: that every male among us is circumcised, as they are.

Won't their livestock and their property and all their animals become ours? Just agree to it, and they'll settle among us.”

And all the men who went out of the city gate listened to Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.

Three days later, while they were all still in pain, two of Jacob's sons — Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers — took their swords, went into the city while it was unsuspecting, and killed every male.

They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword, took Dinah out of Shechem's house and left.

Jacob's sons came in over the dead and looted the city where their sister had been defiled.

They took the flocks and herds and donkeys and everything of theirs in the city and out in the country.

They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, and looted everything in the houses.

And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You've brought trouble on me. You've made me stink to the people living in this country, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. There aren't many of us. If they join forces against me and attack me, I'll be destroyed, and my household with me.”

And they said, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?”
