A new king who didn't know Joseph
These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each man bringing his household: Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah, Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. All Jacob's descendants numbered seventy people. Joseph was already in Egypt. In time Joseph died, along with all his brothers and that whole generation. But the Israelites were fruitful, multiplied rapidly and became incredibly numerous and strong, until the land was full of them. Then a new king came to power in Egypt who knew nothing of Joseph. He told his people, 'Look, these Israelites are becoming more numerous and more powerful than we are.' 'We'd better deal shrewdly with them, or they'll keep multiplying. If war breaks out, they might join our enemies, fight against us and get out of the country.' So the Egyptians put taskmasters over them and crushed them with forced labour. The Israelites built Pharaoh's treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses. But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread, and the Egyptians became increasingly alarmed by them. So the Egyptians worked the Israelites ruthlessly. They made their lives bitter with brutal labour in mortar, brick and every kind of field work. Everything they forced them to do was harsh.

They refused to do what the king of Egypt had ordered and kept the boys alive. The king summoned the midwives. 'Why have you done this?' he demanded. 'Why are you keeping the boys alive?' They told Pharaoh, 'Hebrew women aren't like Egyptian women. They're vigorous — they give birth before the midwife even gets there.' So God was good to the midwives, and the people kept multiplying and became very strong. And because the midwives feared God, he established households for them. Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: 'Every Hebrew son that's born must be thrown into the river. Every daughter may live.'

And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.

And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.
So God was good to the midwives, and the people kept multiplying and became very strong.
So God dealt well with the midwives. And the people grew and got very strong.
Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.
And because the midwives feared God, he established households for them.
And because the midwives feared God, he made them households.
And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.
Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: 'Every Hebrew son that's born must be thrown into the river. Every daughter may live.'
