We went on ahead by ship to Assos, where we planned to take Paul aboard. He had arranged it this way because he intended to travel there on foot. And the next day we came to Miletus. For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so he wouldn't spend time in Asia. Because he hurried, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost. From Miletus Paul sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church. When they came, he said, "You know how I lived among you the whole time, from the first day I came into Asia, serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears and temptations that came upon me through the plots of the Jews. I held back nothing that was profitable to you, but showed you and taught you publicly and from house to house, testifying both to Jews and Greeks repentance towards God and faith towards our Lord Jesus Christ. And now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit witnesses in every city that bonds and sufferings are waiting for me. But none of these things move me, nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I might finish my course with joy and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. Now just then, I know that all of you, who I've gone among preaching the kingdom of God, will see my face no more. So I call you to witness this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare to you all the counsel of God. Watch yourselves and all the flock over which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he purchased with his own blood. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and won't spare the flock. Even from among yourselves men will arise speaking perverse things to draw disciples after themselves. So watch and remember that for the space of three years I didn't stop warning every one night and day with tears. And now, brothers, I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those made holy. I've wanted no man's silver or gold or clothing. Yes, you know yourselves that these hands have served my needs and those with me. In everything I've shown you that by working like this we ought to support the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" When he had said this, he knelt down and prayed with them all. They all wept bitterly, embraced Paul and kissed him, sorrowing most of all because he had said they would see his face no more. Then they accompanied him to the ship.
