The elder, to well-loved Gaius, whom I love in the truth. Dear friend, more than anything I want things to go well for you and your health to hold up, the way it's going well with your soul. It made my day when the brothers turned up and vouched for the truth that's in you — how you're walking in it. Nothing makes me happier than hearing my kids are walking in the truth. Dear friend, you do the right thing by the brothers, and by strangers too, every time. They've borne witness before the church to the love you've shown them. If you send them on their journey in a godly way, you'll do well. Because they went out for his name's sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles. So it's on us to welcome people like that and work alongside the truth.

Diotrephes and Demetrius
I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes — who loves being top dog — will not receive us. So if I get there, I'll be bringing up what he's been up to: running us down with poison talk. And that's not enough for him. He won't take the brothers in himself, he stops the ones who want to, and he throws them out of the church. Dear friend, don't copy what's rotten. Copy what's good. The one doing good belongs to God. The one doing evil hasn't laid eyes on him. Everyone speaks well of Demetrius, and so does the truth itself. We'll vouch for him too, and you know our word's good. I had plenty to write, but I'm not doing it with pen and ink. I'm hoping to see you before long, and we'll talk face to face. Peace to you. The friends here send their best.
