The Shunammite's land
Elisha had told the woman whose son he restored to life: Get up and take your household away. Stay wherever you can, because the Lord has called for a famine, and it will last seven years. The woman did just as the man of God said. She and her household went away and lived in the land of the Philistines for seven years. At the end of the seven years she returned from the land of the Philistines and went to appeal to the king for her house and land. The king happened to be speaking with Gehazi, servant of the man of God, saying: Tell me about all the great things Elisha has done. Just as Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had restored a dead child to life, the boy's mother came in to appeal for her house and land. Gehazi said: My lord the king, this is the woman, and this is the son Elisha restored to life. The king questioned the woman, and she told him the story. Then the king appointed an officer to handle her case and said: Restore everything that belonged to her, along with all the income from her land from the day she left until now.

Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking a gift of every good thing Damascus had to offer — forty camel-loads. He stood before Elisha and said: Your son Ben-hadad king of Syria has sent me to ask, Will I recover from this illness? Elisha answered: Go and tell him, You may certainly recover. Still, the Lord has shown me that he will certainly die. Elisha stared at Hazael until the man became uncomfortable. Then the man of God began to weep. Hazael asked: Why are you crying, my lord? Elisha answered: Because I know the terrible things you'll do to the Israelites. You'll set their strongholds on fire, kill their young men with the sword, dash their children to pieces and rip open their pregnant women. Hazael said: What is your servant — a dog — that I could do such a monstrous thing? Elisha answered: The Lord has shown me that you will become king of Syria. Hazael left Elisha and returned to his master. Ben-hadad asked: What did Elisha tell you? Hazael answered: He told me you would certainly recover. But the next day Hazael took a thick cloth, soaked it in water and spread it over the king's face until he died. Then Hazael became king in his place.

And the king said to Hazael: Take a gift in your hand and go to meet the man of God, and ask of the Lord by him: Will I get over this sickness? So Hazael went to meet him and took a gift with him, of every good thing of Damascus, forty camels' load. And he came and stood in front of him: Your son Ben-Hadad king of Aram has sent me to you: Will I get over this sickness? And Elisha said to him: Go, say to him: You'll definitely get over it. But the Lord has shown me he'll definitely die. And he looked at him steadily till he was ashamed. And the man of God wept. And Hazael said: Why does my lord weep? And he answered: Because I know the harm you'll do to the people of Israel. You'll set their strongholds on fire and kill their young men with the sword and dash their children and rip up their pregnant women. And Hazael said, But what, is thy servant a dog, that he should do this great thing? And Elisha answered, The LORD hath shewed me that thou shalt be king over Syria. So he departed from Elisha, and came to his master; who said to him, What said Elisha to thee? And he answered, He told me that thou shouldest surely recover. And it came to pass on the morrow, that he took a thick cloth, and dipped it in water, and spread it on his face, so that he died: and Hazael reigned in his stead.

And Hazael said, But what, is thy servant a dog, that he should do this great thing? And Elisha answered, The LORD hath shewed me that thou shalt be king over Syria.
Hazael left Elisha and returned to his master. Ben-hadad asked: What did Elisha tell you? Hazael answered: He told me you would certainly recover.

Jehoram and Ahaziah of Judah
In the fifth year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, while Jehoshaphat was still king of Judah, Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat began to reign over Judah. He was thirty-two years old when he became king and reigned eight years in Jerusalem. Jehoram followed the ways of the kings of Israel, just as Ahab's house had done, because Ahab's daughter was his wife. He did what was evil in the Lord's sight. Even so, the Lord would not destroy Judah, for the sake of his servant David, because he had promised to preserve a lamp for David and his descendants. During his reign Edom rebelled against Judah's rule and set up a king of its own. Joram crossed to Zair with all his chariots. During the night he attacked the Edomites who had surrounded him and their chariot commanders, but his troops fled to their tents. So Edom has remained independent of Judah to this day. Libnah rebelled at the same time. The rest of Joram's acts and everything he did are recorded in the chronicles of the kings of Judah. Joram died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David. His son Ahaziah became king in his place. In the twelfth year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram became king of Judah. Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king and reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother was Athaliah, granddaughter of Omri king of Israel. Ahaziah followed the ways of Ahab's house and did what was evil in the Lord's sight, because he was related to Ahab's house by marriage. So Joram went over to Zair, and all the chariots with him. And he got up by night and struck the Edomites who surrounded him, and the captains of the chariots. And the people ran to their tents.

Joram died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David. His son Ahaziah became king in his place.
