The widow's oil
A widow whose husband had belonged to the company of prophets cried out to Elisha: Your servant, my husband, is dead. You know he feared the Lord. Now his creditor has come to take my two sons as slaves. Elisha said: What can I do for you? Tell me, what have you got in the house? She replied: Your servant has nothing at all except a jar of oil. He said: Go around to all your neighbours and borrow empty containers. Get plenty of them. Then go inside with your sons and shut the door. Pour the oil into all those containers, setting each one aside when it's full. She left him, went home and shut the door behind herself and her sons. They brought the containers to her, and she kept pouring. When every container was full, she said to one of her sons: Bring me another one. He answered: There aren't any left. Then the oil stopped flowing. She went and told the man of God. He said: Go and sell the oil, pay your debt, and you and your sons can live on what remains.

She left him, went home and shut the door behind herself and her sons. They brought the containers to her, and she kept pouring.
So she went from him and shut the door on her and on her sons, who brought the vessels to her. And she poured out.
So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out.
When every container was full, she said to one of her sons: Bring me another one. He answered: There aren't any left. Then the oil stopped flowing.
And when the vessels were full, she said to her son: Bring me another vessel. And he said to her: There isn't another vessel. And the oil stopped.
And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.
She went and told the man of God. He said: Go and sell the oil, pay your debt, and you and your sons can live on what remains.
Then she came and told the man of God. And he said: Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and live you and your children on the rest.
Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.
The Shunammite woman
One day Elisha went to Shunem, where a wealthy woman urged him to stay for a meal. After that, whenever he passed through, he stopped there to eat. She said to her husband: I know this man who keeps passing our way is a holy man of God. Let's build him a small room upstairs with walls, and put in a bed, table, stool and lamp. Then whenever he comes by, he'll have somewhere to stay. One day Elisha arrived, went up to the room and lay down there. He said to his servant Gehazi: Call the Shunammite woman. Gehazi called her, and she stood before Elisha. Elisha told Gehazi: Say to her, You've gone to all this trouble for us. What can we do for you? Would you like me to put in a word for you with the king or the commander of the army? She answered: I'm settled among my own people. Elisha asked: Then what can be done for her? Gehazi said: Well, she has no son, and her husband is old. Elisha said: Call her. Gehazi called her, and she stood in the doorway. Elisha told her: About this time next year you'll be holding a son in your arms. She said: No, my lord, man of God! Please don't get your servant's hopes up. But the woman became pregnant, and about that same time the following year she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her.
And one day Elisha went to Shunem, where there was a great woman. And she pushed him to eat bread. And so it was, that as often as he went past, he turned in there to eat bread. And she said to her husband: Look now — I see this is a holy man of God who goes past us all the time. And she answered, I dwell among mine own people. And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old. And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door. And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid. And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.

And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.
The child raised
The child grew. One day he went out to his father, who was with the reapers. He suddenly cried to his father: My head! My head! His father told a servant: Carry him to his mother. The servant carried him to his mother. The boy sat on her lap until noon, and then he died. She went upstairs, laid him on the man of God's bed, shut the door and went out. She called her husband and said: Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can hurry to the man of God and come straight back. He asked: Why go to him today? It isn't the new moon or the sabbath. She answered: It'll be all right. She saddled the donkey and told her servant: Get moving. Don't slow down for me unless I tell you. So she travelled to the man of God at Mount Carmel. When Elisha saw her in the distance, he said to Gehazi: There is the Shunammite woman. Run out to meet her and ask: Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is the child all right? She answered: All right. But when she reached the man of God at the mountain, she grabbed his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but Elisha said: Leave her alone. She's in bitter distress, and the Lord has hidden the reason from me. She said: Did I ask my lord for a son? Didn't I say, Don't get my hopes up? Elisha told Gehazi: Tuck your robe into your belt, take my staff and go. If you meet anyone, don't stop to greet them; if anyone greets you, don't stop to answer. Lay my staff on the boy's face. But the child's mother said: As surely as the Lord lives, and as surely as you live, I won't leave you. So Elisha got up and followed her. Gehazi went ahead and laid the staff on the child's face, but there was no sound or response. He returned to meet Elisha and said: The child hasn't woken up. When Elisha reached the house, the child was lying dead on his bed. Elisha went in, shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the Lord. Then he got onto the bed and lay over the child, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes and hands to hands. As he stretched himself over the boy, the child's body grew warm. Elisha got up and walked back and forth across the room. Then he got back on the bed and stretched himself over the child again. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes. Elisha called Gehazi and said: Call the Shunammite woman. When she came in, he said: Pick up your son. She came in, fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she picked up her son and went out.
And when the child was grown, one day he went out to his father, to the reapers. And he said to his father: My head, my head. And he said to a boy: Carry him to his mother. And when he'd taken him and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died. And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door on him and went out. And she called to her husband: Send me one of the young men, please, and one of the donkeys, so I can run to the man of God and come back again. And he said: Why go to him today? It isn't new moon or sabbath. And she said: It'll be all right. Then she saddled a donkey and said to her servant: Drive and go on. Don't slow down for me unless I tell you. So she went and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. And when the man of God saw her a long way off, he said to Gehazi his servant: Look — there's that Shunammite. Then he said to Gehazi: Strap up your waist and take my staff in your hand and go your way. If you meet any man, don't greet him. And if anyone greets you, don't answer him again. And lay my staff on the face of the child. And the mother of the child said: As surely as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, I won't leave you. And he got up and followed her. And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder is that Shunammite: Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well. And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is vexed within her: and the LORD hath hid it from me, and hath not told me. Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me? Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child. And the mother of the child said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her. And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked. And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed. He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD. And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm. Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son. She called her husband and said: Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can hurry to the man of God and come straight back.
And she called to her husband: Send me one of the young men, please, and one of the donkeys, so I can run to the man of God and come back again.
And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.

She said: Did I ask my lord for a son? Didn't I say, Don't get my hopes up?
Then she said: Did I want a son of my lord? Didn't I say: Don't trick me?
Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me?

And the mother of the child said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.
Gehazi went ahead and laid the staff on the child's face, but there was no sound or response. He returned to meet Elisha and said: The child hasn't woken up.
And Gehazi went on in front of them and laid the staff on the face of the child. But there wasn't any voice or hearing. So he went back to meet him and told him: The child hasn't woken.
And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked.
When Elisha reached the house, the child was lying dead on his bed.
And when Elisha had come into the house, there was the child, dead and laid on his bed.
And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed.
Elisha went in, shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the Lord.
So he went in and shut the door on the two of them, and prayed to the Lord.
He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD.

Elisha got up and walked back and forth across the room. Then he got back on the bed and stretched himself over the child again. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.
Then he came back and walked in the house to and fro, and went up and stretched himself out on him. And the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.
Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.
Elisha called Gehazi and said: Call the Shunammite woman. When she came in, he said: Pick up your son.
And he called Gehazi: Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she'd come in to him, he said: Take up your son.
And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son.
She came in, fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she picked up her son and went out.
Then she went in and fell at his feet and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son and went out.
Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out.
Death in the pot
Elisha returned to Gilgal while there was a famine in the land. As the company of prophets sat before him, he told his servant: Put the large pot on and cook some stew for the prophets. One of them went out into the field to gather herbs. He found a wild vine, gathered a lapful of wild gourds and came back. Without knowing what they were, he sliced them into the pot of stew.
