The seventy sons
Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. Jehu wrote letters to the rulers of Jezreel, the elders and those responsible for raising Ahab's sons in Samaria. He wrote: As soon as this letter reaches you, your master's sons are with you, and you have chariots, horses, a fortified city and weapons. Choose the best and most capable of your master's sons, put him on his father's throne, and fight for your master's house. They were terrified and said: Two kings couldn't stand against him. How are we meant to? So the palace administrator, city governor, elders and guardians sent word to Jehu: We are your servants and will do whatever you tell us. We won't make anyone king. Do whatever you think is right. Jehu wrote them a second letter: If you're on my side and will obey me, bring me the heads of your master's sons and come to Jezreel by this time tomorrow. The king's seventy sons were being raised by the city's leading men. When the letter arrived, they took the king's sons, killed all seventy, put their heads in baskets and sent them to Jehu at Jezreel. A messenger came and told Jehu: They've brought the heads of the king's sons. Jehu said: Put them in two piles at the entrance of the gate until morning. The next morning Jehu went out, stood before all the people and said: You're innocent. I conspired against my master and killed him — but who killed all these? Understand this: not one word the Lord spoke against Ahab's house will fail. The Lord has done what he said through his servant Elijah. Then Jehu killed everyone from Ahab's house who remained in Jezreel, along with all his great men, close friends and priests. He left no survivor. Jehu set out for Samaria. On the way, at the shepherds' shearing house, he met relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah. Jehu asked: Who are you? They answered: We're Ahaziah's relatives. We're heading down to greet the king's sons and the queen mother's sons. Jehu ordered: Take them alive. His men captured all forty-two of them alive, then killed them at the pit by the shearing house. He spared none. After leaving there, Jehu met Jehonadab son of Rechab coming towards him. Jehu greeted him and asked: Is your heart as true to mine as mine is to yours? Jehonadab answered: It is. Jehu said: Then give me your hand. Jehonadab did, and Jehu pulled him up into the chariot. Jehu said: Come with me and see how zealous I am for the Lord. So Jehonadab rode with him in the chariot. When Jehu reached Samaria, he killed everyone there who remained from Ahab's house, destroying it completely, according to the word the Lord had spoken to Elijah.

And he arose and departed, and came to Samaria. And as he was at the shearing house in the way, Jehu met with the brethren of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, Who are ye? And they answered, We are the brethren of Ahaziah; and we go down to salute the children of the king and the children of the queen. And he said, Take them alive. So they made him ride in his chariot. And when he came to Samaria, he slew all that remained unto Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed him, according to the saying of the LORD, which he spake to Elijah.

Understand this: not one word the Lord spoke against Ahab's house will fail. The Lord has done what he said through his servant Elijah.
Know now that nothing will fall to the earth of the word of the Lord that the Lord spoke about the house of Ahab. Because the Lord has done what he spoke by his servant Elijah.
Know now that there shall fall unto the earth nothing of the word of the LORD, which the LORD spake concerning the house of Ahab: for the LORD hath done that which he spake by his servant Elijah.
Then Jehu killed everyone from Ahab's house who remained in Jezreel, along with all his great men, close friends and priests. He left no survivor.

The temple of Baal
Then Jehu gathered all the people and announced: Ahab served Baal a little; Jehu will serve him much more. Now summon every prophet of Baal, every worshipper and every priest. Make sure nobody is missing, because I have a great sacrifice to offer Baal. Anyone who fails to come will not live. But Jehu was acting deceptively so he could destroy Baal's worshippers. Jehu said: Proclaim a special assembly for Baal. So they proclaimed it. Jehu sent word throughout Israel, and every worshipper of Baal came. Not one stayed away. They entered Baal's temple until it was packed from one end to the other. Jehu told the keeper of the wardrobe: Bring out robes for all Baal's worshippers. So he brought them robes. Jehu and Jehonadab son of Rechab entered Baal's temple. Jehu told the worshippers: Check carefully and make sure there are no servants of the Lord here — only worshippers of Baal. They went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Jehu had stationed eighty men outside and warned them: If any of the men I'm putting into your hands escapes, your life will pay for his. As soon as Jehu finished offering the burnt offering, he ordered the guards and officers: Go in and kill them. Don't let anyone get out. They put them to the sword, threw the bodies out, and pushed into the inner part of Baal's temple. They brought out the sacred pillars from Baal's temple and burned them. They smashed Baal's pillar, tore down his temple and turned it into a public latrine, which it remains to this day. That is how Jehu wiped out Baal worship from Israel.
And Jehu gathered all the people together and said to them: Ahab served Baal a bit, but Jehu will serve him a lot. Now call me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants and all his priests. Don't let anyone be missing. Because I've got a great sacrifice to do to Baal. Whoever is missing won't live. But Jehu did it cunningly, so he could wreck the servants of Baal. And Jehu said: Call a solemn gathering for Baal. And they called it. And Jehu sent through all Israel. And all the servants of Baal came, so there wasn't a man left who didn't come. And they came into the house of Baal, and the house of Baal was full from one end to another. And he said to the one over the wardrobe: Bring out clothes for all the servants of Baal. And he brought them out clothes. And Jehu went, and Jehonadab son of Rekab, into the house of Baal, and said to the servants of Baal: Search and look that there aren't any of the servants of the Lord here with you, but only the servants of Baal. And when they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings, Jehu set eighty men outside and said: If any of the men I've brought into your hands gets away, the one who lets him go, his life will go for the life of him. And as soon as he'd finished offering the burnt offering, Jehu said to the guard and to the captains: Go in and kill them. Don't let any come out. And they struck them with the edge of the sword. And the guard and the captains threw them out and went to the town of the house of Baal. And they brought out the pillars out of the house of Baal and burnt them. And they broke down the pillar of Baal and broke down the house of Baal, and made it a latrine right to this day. So Jehu wrecked Baal out of Israel.

And when they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings, Jehu appointed fourscore men without, and said, If any of the men whom I have brought into your hands escape, he that letteth him go, his life shall be for the life of him. And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come forth. And they smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of Baal. And they brought forth the images out of the house of Baal, and burned them. And they brake down the image of Baal, and brake down the house of Baal, and made it a draught house unto this day. Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.

They brought out the sacred pillars from Baal's temple and burned them.
And they brought out the pillars out of the house of Baal and burnt them.
And they brought forth the images out of the house of Baal, and burned them.
They smashed Baal's pillar, tore down his temple and turned it into a public latrine, which it remains to this day.
And they broke down the pillar of Baal and broke down the house of Baal, and made it a latrine right to this day.
And they brake down the image of Baal, and brake down the house of Baal, and made it a draught house unto this day.
That is how Jehu wiped out Baal worship from Israel.
So Jehu wrecked Baal out of Israel.
Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.
Jehu's rule
However, Jehu did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin — the golden calves at Bethel and Dan. The Lord said to Jehu: Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in my eyes, and have done to Ahab's house everything I intended, your descendants will sit on Israel's throne to the fourth generation. But Jehu did not take care to follow the law of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, who had caused Israel to sin. In those days the Lord began to cut Israel down in size. Hazael attacked them throughout Israel's territory, east of the Jordan — all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, Reubenites and Manassites, from Aroer beside the river Arnon through Gilead and Bashan. The rest of Jehu's acts, everything he did and all his might are recorded in the chronicles of the kings of Israel. Jehu died and was buried in Samaria. His son Jehoahaz became king in his place. Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria for twenty-eight years.
But Jehu didn't turn from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who made Israel sin — the golden calves in Bethel and in Dan. And the Lord said to Jehu: Because you've done well in doing what's right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab according to everything in my heart, your children of the fourth generation will sit on the throne of Israel. But Jehu didn't watch to walk in the teaching of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart. Because he didn't turn from the sins of Jeroboam, who made Israel sin. In those days the Lord started to cut Israel short. And Hazael struck them in all the borders of Israel — from the Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites and the Reubenites and the Manassites, from Aroer that's by the river Arnon, Gilead and Bashan. Now the rest of the acts of Jehu and everything he did and all his might, aren't they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? And Jehu died, and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son ruled in his place. And the time Jehu ruled over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.
Howbeit from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden calves that were in Bethel, and that were in Dan. And the LORD said unto Jehu, Because thou hast done well in executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done unto the house of Ahab according to all that was in mine heart, thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.
