The gift got ready

Now about this service to the saints, there is no need for me to write to you at all. Because I know how willing you are, and I have boasted about you to the Macedonians — that Achaia was ready a year ago. And your enthusiasm has stirred up most of them. But I have sent the brothers so our boasting about you won't turn out empty in this matter — so that, as I said, you will be ready. Otherwise, if any Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we would be ashamed of having been so confident — never mind you. So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and get the gift you promised organised in advance, so it is ready as a gift and not as something squeezed out of you.

Because about the serving of the holy ones, it's more than enough for me to write to you. Because I know the ready mind you have, that I boast of you about it to the ones of Macedonia — that Achaia was ready a year ago. And your zeal has stirred up plenty. But I've sent the brothers, in case our boasting of you should be empty in this matter, so, the way I said, you can be ready. In case by any means, if the ones of Macedonia come with me and find you not ready, we (not to say you) should be ashamed in this same confident boasting. So I thought it needful to push the brothers to go before to you and to make up ahead of time your gift promised before, so it can be ready as a matter of generosity and not as of grasping.

For as touching the ministering to the saints, it is superfluous for me to write to you: For I know the forwardness of your mind, for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and your zeal hath provoked very many. Yet have I sent the brethren, lest our boasting of you should be in vain in this behalf; that, as I said, ye may be ready: Lest haply if they of Macedonia come with me, and find you unprepared, we (that we say not, ye) should be ashamed in this same confident boasting. Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness.

1

Now about this service to the saints, there is no need for me to write to you at all.

Plain English

Because about the serving of the holy ones, it's more than enough for me to write to you.

King James Version, 1611

For as touching the ministering to the saints, it is superfluous for me to write to you:

2

Because I know how willing you are, and I have boasted about you to the Macedonians — that Achaia was ready a year ago. And your enthusiasm has stirred up most of them.

Plain English

Because I know the ready mind you have, that I boast of you about it to the ones of Macedonia — that Achaia was ready a year ago. And your zeal has stirred up plenty.

King James Version, 1611

For I know the forwardness of your mind, for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and your zeal hath provoked very many.

3

But I have sent the brothers so our boasting about you won't turn out empty in this matter — so that, as I said, you will be ready.

Plain English

But I've sent the brothers, in case our boasting of you should be empty in this matter, so, the way I said, you can be ready.

King James Version, 1611

Yet have I sent the brethren, lest our boasting of you should be in vain in this behalf; that, as I said, ye may be ready:

4

Otherwise, if any Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we would be ashamed of having been so confident — never mind you.

Plain English

In case by any means, if the ones of Macedonia come with me and find you not ready, we (not to say you) should be ashamed in this same confident boasting.

King James Version, 1611

Lest haply if they of Macedonia come with me, and find you unprepared, we (that we say not, ye) should be ashamed in this same confident boasting.

5

So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and get the gift you promised organised in advance, so it is ready as a gift and not as something squeezed out of you.

Plain English

So I thought it needful to push the brothers to go before to you and to make up ahead of time your gift promised before, so it can be ready as a matter of generosity and not as of grasping.

King James Version, 1611

Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness.

God loves a cheerful giver

Remember this: whoever sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will reap generously. Every man should give as he has made up his mind in his heart — not grudgingly, and not under pressure. Because God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace overflow to you, so that having enough of everything at all times, you may overflow in every good work. As it is written: He has scattered abroad, he has given to the poor, and his righteousness stands forever. Now the one who supplies seed to the sower and bread to eat will supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way for all your generosity, which through us produces thanksgiving to God. Because doing this service doesn't only meet the needs of the saints. It also overflows into many thanksgivings to God. Through the proof this service gives, men will glorify God for your obedience to the gospel of Christ you confess, and for the openness of your sharing with them and with everyone. And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace of God on you. Thanks be to God for his gift beyond words.

But this I say: The one who sows sparingly will reap sparingly too. And the one who sows plentifully will reap plentifully too. Every man according as he sets out in his heart, so let him give — not grudgingly or of need. Because God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace plentiful towards you, so that always having all you need in everything, you can be plentiful to every good work. (As it's written: He's scattered abroad, he's given to the poor. His righteousness stays forever. Now the one who gives seed to the sower gives both bread for your food and grows the seed you've sown and increases the fruits of your righteousness.) Being made rich in everything to all generosity, that works through us thanksgiving to God. Because the serving of this service not only supplies the want of the holy ones but flows over too by plenty of thanksgivings to God. While by the proof of this service they give glory to God for your owning up to the good news of Christ, and for your generous giving to them and to all men. And by their prayer for you, who long after you for the great grace of God in you. Thanks be to God for his gift past telling.

But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;) Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God. For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God; Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men; And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you. Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.
