Treasure in earthen vessels
So since we have this ministry by the mercy shown us, we don't lose heart. We have given up the shameful things men hide. We don't go about it with cunning, and we don't tamper with the word of God. We set out the truth plainly, and so commend ourselves to every man's conscience in God's eyes. And if our gospel is hidden, it is hidden to those who are lost, whose minds the god of this world has blinded, so they can't see the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God. Because we don't preach ourselves. We preach Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. Because the God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness has shone in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay pots, so it is plain that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are pressed on every side, but not crushed. We are at a loss, but not in despair. Persecuted, but not abandoned. Cast down, but not destroyed. We always carry about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, so the life of Jesus can be seen in our body as well. Because we who are alive are always being handed over to death for Jesus' sake, so the life of Jesus can be seen in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, and life in you.
So seeing we've got this service, as we've had mercy, we don't faint. But we've thrown off the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness or handling the word of God with deceit. But by making the truth plain, commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. But if our good news is hidden, it's hidden to the ones who die. In them the god of this world has blinded the minds of the ones who don't believe, in case the light of the glorious good news of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. Because we don't preach ourselves but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. Because God, who ordered the light to shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Though our outer man is wasting away, our inner man is being renewed day by day. Because our light and momentary trouble is working out for us an eternal weight of glory that outweighs it all beyond measure. So we don't fix our eyes on what can be seen, but on what can't be seen. Because what can be seen is temporary, and what can't be seen is eternal.
