The great crowd

It happened after this too that the Moabites and the Ammonites, and with them others besides the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. Then some came who told Jehoshaphat: A great army is coming against you from beyond the sea on this side of Syria. And they're in Hazazontamar, that's Engedi. Jehoshaphat was afraid, so he set himself to seek the Lord and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. Judah gathered together to ask the Lord for help. People came from every city in Judah to seek the Lord. Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the temple of the Lord, in front of the new court. He said: Lord God of our ancestors, aren't you God in heaven? Don't you rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in your hand, and no one can stand against you. Aren't you our God, who drove out the people of this land before your people Israel and gave it to the offspring of Abraham your friend forever? They lived in it and have built you a holy place in it for your name: If disaster comes on us — sword, judgment, disease or famine — we'll stand before this temple and before you, because your name is in this temple. We'll cry to you in our distress, and you will hear and save us. Now the Ammonites and Moab and Mount Seir, that you wouldn't let Israel go against when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them and didn't wreck them — Look how they pay us back, coming to throw us out of what you own that you've given us to inherit. Our God, won't you judge them? We have no strength against this great army coming at us, and we don't know what to do — but our eyes are on you. All Judah stood before the Lord, with their little ones, their wives and their children.

It happened after this too that the sons of Moab and the sons of Ammon, and with them others besides the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. Then some came who told Jehoshaphat: A great crowd is coming against you from beyond the sea on this side of Aram. And look — they're in Hazazon Tamar, that's En Gedi. And Jehoshaphat was frightened and set himself to look for the Lord, and called a fast through all Judah. And Judah gathered themselves together to ask help of the Lord. They came out of all the towns of Judah too to look for the Lord. And Jehoshaphat stood in the gathering of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, in front of the new court. Aren't you our God, who drove out the people of this land in front of your people Israel and gave it to the offspring of Abraham your mate forever? And they lived in it and have built you a holy place in it for your name: If trouble comes on us, the sword, judgment, or plague or famine, and we stand in front of this house and in front of you — because your name is in this house — and cry out to you in our trouble, then you'll hear and help. Our God, won't you judge them? Because we've got no might against this great crowd that's coming against us. And we don't know what to do, but our eyes are on you. And all Judah stood in front of the Lord, with their little ones, their wives and their children.

It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. The battle isn't yours

Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jahaziel son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the middle of the assembly. He said: Listen, all Judah, you people of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat. This is what the Lord says to you: Don't be afraid or discouraged because of this great army. The battle isn't yours — it's God's. Go down against them tomorrow. They come up by the cliff of Ziz. And you'll find them at the end of the brook, in front of the wilderness of Jeruel. You won't need to fight this battle. Take your positions, stand firm and see the Lord's salvation for you, Judah and Jerusalem. Don't be afraid or discouraged. Go out against them tomorrow, because the Lord will be with you. Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground. And all Judah and the people of Jerusalem fell down before the Lord, bowing down to the Lord. The Levites, of the sons of the Kohathites and of the sons of the Korahites, stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with a very loud voice. They got up early in the morning and went out toward the wilderness of Tekoa. As they left, Jehoshaphat stood and said: Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem. Believe in the Lord your God and you'll be established; believe his prophets and you'll prosper. After consulting the people, he appointed singers for the Lord to praise the beauty of holiness as they went out ahead of the army, saying: Praise the Lord, for his mercy endures forever. As soon as they began singing and praising, the Lord set ambushes against the Ammonites, Moabites and people of Mount Seir who'd come against Judah, and they were defeated. Because the Ammonites and Moab stood up against the people of Mount Seir, to kill and wreck them completely. And when they'd finished off the people of Seir, every one helped to wreck the other. When Judah came towards the watchtower in the wilderness, they looked at the crowd. And there they were, dead bodies fallen to the earth, and nobody had got away. When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away their plunder, they found abundant riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, that they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry. And they were three days gathering the plunder, because there was so much. On the fourth day they gathered in the Valley of Berakah. Because there they blessed the Lord. That's why the name of that place was called the Valley of Berakah to this day. Then they turned back, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat at their head, to go again to Jerusalem with joy. Because the Lord had made them celebrate over those against them. They came to Jerusalem with harps and lyres and trumpets, to the temple of the Lord. The fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they heard the Lord had fought against those against Israel. The rule of Jehoshaphat was quiet. Because his God gave him rest all around.

Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jahaziel son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the middle of the gathering. And he said: Listen, all Judah and you people of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat. This is what the Lord says to you. Don't be frightened or fall apart because of this great crowd. You won't have to fight in this battle. Set yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord with you, Judah and Jerusalem. Don't be frightened or fall apart. Go out against them tomorrow, because the Lord will be with you. And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground. For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another. And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped. The rest of Jehoshaphat

Jehoshaphat ruled over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi. He walked in the way of Asa his father and didn't turn from it, doing what was right in the Lord's sight. But the worship shrines weren't taken away. Because the people still hadn't got their heart ready towards the God of their fathers.
