Abijah's speech
Now in the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah began to reign over Judah. He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name too was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. Abijah set the battle in order with an army of fighting men of war, four hundred thousand chosen men. Jeroboam too drew up in battle against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, strong brave men. Abijah stood up on Mount Zemaraim, which is in Mount Ephraim: Listen to me, Jeroboam and all Israel. Don't you know the Lord God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David forever, to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt? But Jeroboam son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon son of David, got up and rebelled against his lord. Worthless men gathered to him, sons of wickedness, and made themselves strong against Rehoboam son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tender-hearted and couldn't stand up to them. Now you think to stand up to the kingdom of the Lord in the hand of the sons of David. And you're a great army, and there are golden calves with you that Jeroboam made you for gods. Haven't you thrown out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made yourselves priests the way the peoples of other lands do? So whoever comes to fill his hand with a young bull and seven rams can be a priest of what aren't gods. But as for us, the Lord is our God, and we haven't abandoned him. The priests serving the Lord are Aaron's descendants, and the Levites do their work. They burn burnt sacrifices to the Lord every morning and evening, and sweet incense. And the bread of the Presence is set on the pure table, and the lampstand of gold with its lamps to burn every evening. Because we keep the charge of the Lord our God. But you've left him. God himself is with us as our commander, and his priests with sounding trumpets to sound out against you. People of Israel, don't fight the Lord God of your fathers, because you won't prosper.

And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods. Have ye not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of other lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods. But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and the priests, which minister unto the LORD, are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites wait upon their business: And they burn unto the LORD every morning and every evening burnt sacrifices and sweet incense: the shewbread also set they in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of the LORD our God; but ye have forsaken him. And, behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the LORD God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.

Jeroboam didn't get his strength back again in the days of Abijah. And the Lord struck him, and he died. But Abijah grew strong and married fourteen wives, and fathered twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
