Rehoboam went to Shechem, because all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard about it — he was in Egypt, where he'd flee from King Solomon — Jeroboam came back out of Egypt. They sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam: Your father made our yoke heavy. Now ease the hard service your father put on us and lighten this heavy yoke, and we'll serve you. Rehoboam told them: Come back to me in three days. So the people left. King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men who'd stood in front of Solomon his father while he was still alive: What counsel do you give me, to bring an answer back to this people? They told him: If you're kind to these people, please them and give them a good answer, they'll be your servants forever. But he rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who'd grown up with him and now stood before him. He said to them: What counsel do you give, so we can bring an answer back to this people, who've spoken to me: Make the yoke your father put on us lighter? The young men who'd grown up with him said: These people told you, Your father made our yoke heavy; make it lighter. Tell them this: My little finger is thicker than my father's waist. My father loaded you with a heavy yoke; I'll make it heavier. My father disciplined you with whips; I'll do it with scorpions. Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, the way the king had said: Come back to me on the third day. The king answered them roughly. And King Rehoboam left the counsel of the old men, And answered them according to the counsel of the young men: My father made your yoke heavy, but I'll add more to it. My father set you straight with whips, but I'll do it with scorpions. The king didn't listen to the people. Because it was of God, so the Lord could carry out his word that he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat. When all Israel saw the king wouldn't listen, the people answered him: What share have we in David? What inheritance do we have in Jesse's son? Back to your tents, Israel! David, look after your own house. And all Israel went home. But as for the Israelites who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam ruled over them. Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the forced labour. And the Israelites stoned him with stones, so he died. But King Rehoboam hurried to get himself up into his chariot, to run to Jerusalem. Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.
