Turning from the faith

Now the Spirit says plainly that in later times some will fall away from the faith, giving their attention to deceiving spirits and the teachings of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, with their conscience seared as with a hot iron; They forbid marriage and order people to keep off certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. Because everything God made is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, since it is made holy by the word of God and prayer. If you put the brothers in remembrance of these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good teaching, which you have followed. Have nothing to do with godless old wives' tales. Train yourself instead to live devoted to God. Physical training has some value, but living devoted to God is valuable in every way, because it holds promise for both this life and the life to come. This is a faithful saying, and worth taking hold of. This is why we work hard and put up with abuse: because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all people, especially those who believe.

Now the Spirit speaks plainly, that in the last times some will leave the faith, paying attention to deceiving spirits and teachings of demons. Speaking lies in pretending, having their conscience burnt with a hot iron. Stopping people marrying and ordering them to keep from foods that God has created to be taken with thanksgiving by the ones who believe and know the truth. Because every creature of God is good, and nothing to be thrown away if it's taken with thanksgiving. Because it's made holy by the word of God and prayer. If you put the brothers in mind of these things, you'll be a good servant of Jesus Christ, brought up in the words of faith and of good teaching that you've come to. But refuse godless and old wives' fables, and train yourself rather to godliness. Because bodily training profits a little. But godliness is of use to everything, having promise of the life that now is and of the one to come. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all taking in. Because for this reason we both work and suffer insult, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, especially of the ones who believe.

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

Be an example

Command and teach these things. Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young. Instead, be an example to the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith and in purity. Until I come, give attention to reading, encouragement and teaching. Don't neglect the gift that is in you, given you by prophecy when the elders laid their hands on you. Give your mind to these things. Throw yourself into them, so everyone can see how you are coming along. Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Stick at it, because in doing so you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

Order and teach these things. Let no man look down on your youth. But be an example to the ones who believe, in word, in way of life, in love, in spirit, in faith, in pureness. Till I come, give yourself to reading, to warning, to teaching. Don't neglect the gift in you, that was given you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the elders. Think about these things. Give yourself completely to them, so your going ahead can be plain to all. Watch yourself and the teaching. Go on in them. Because in doing this you'll both save yourself and the ones who hear you.

These things command and teach. Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
