Samuel calls them back
The men of Kiriath-Jearim came and took up the ark of the Lord. They brought it to Abinadab's house on the hill and consecrated his son Eleazar to guard it. The ark remained at Kiriath-Jearim a long time — twenty years in all — and the whole people of Israel mourned and sought after the Lord. Samuel said to all Israel: If you're really returning to the Lord with all your heart, get rid of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths. Set your hearts on the Lord and serve him alone, and he'll rescue you from the Philistines. So the Israelites got rid of the Baals and Ashtoreths and served the Lord alone. Samuel said: Gather all Israel at Mizpah, and I'll pray to the Lord for you. They gathered at Mizpah, drew water and poured it out before the Lord. They fasted that day and confessed: We have sinned against the Lord. Samuel judged Israel at Mizpah.

Samuel said: Gather all Israel at Mizpah, and I'll pray to the Lord for you.

Ebenezer
When the Philistine rulers heard Israel had gathered at Mizpah, they marched up against them. The Israelites heard about it and were afraid. The Israelites said to Samuel: Don't stop crying out to the Lord our God for us. Ask him to save us from the Philistines. Samuel took a young lamb that was still nursing and offered it whole as a burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him. While Samuel was offering the burnt offering, the Philistines came up to attack Israel. But that day the Lord thundered with a mighty voice against the Philistines and threw them into such confusion that Israel routed them. The men of Israel rushed out from Mizpah, pursued the Philistines and struck them down as far as below Beth-Car. Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying: Up to this point, the Lord has helped us. So the Philistines were subdued and stopped invading Israelite territory. The Lord's hand was against the Philistines throughout Samuel's lifetime. The cities the Philistines had taken from Israel, from Ekron to Gath, were restored. Israel recovered the surrounding territory as well, and there was peace between Israel and the Amorites. Samuel judged Israel throughout his life. Year after year he travelled a circuit through Bethel, Gilgal and Mizpah, judging Israel in each of those places. Then Samuel would return to Ramah, where his home was. He judged Israel there and built an altar to the Lord.
And when the Philistines heard the people of Israel had gathered together to Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the people of Israel heard about it, they were frightened of the Philistines. And the people of Israel said to Samuel: Don't stop crying out to the Lord our God for us, so he can save us out of the hand of the Philistines. And Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. And Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord heard him. And as Samuel was offering the burnt offering, the Philistines came near to fight Israel. But the Lord thundered with a great thunder that day on the Philistines and threw them into a panic. And they were struck down in front of Israel. And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah and chased the Philistines and struck them right to below Beth Kar. Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer: The Lord has helped us this far. So the Philistines were brought down, and they didn't come into the border of Israel any more. And the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. And the towns the Philistines had taken from Israel were given back to Israel, from Ekron right to Gath. And Israel rescued their borders out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites. And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. And he went from year to year on a circuit to Bethel and Gilgal and Mizpah, and judged Israel in all those places. And he came back to Ramah, because his house was there. And there he judged Israel. And he built an altar there to the Lord.

And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Bethcar. Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us. So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites. And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
