The death of Saul
The Philistines fought against Israel. The Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa. The Philistines chased Saul and his sons closely. They killed Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchi-Shua, Saul's sons. The battle pressed hard against Saul. The archers caught up with him and wounded him badly. Saul said to his armour-bearer: Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised men will come and run me through and abuse me. But his armour-bearer was too afraid. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it. When his armour-bearer saw Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him. So Saul, his three sons, his armour-bearer and all his men died together that day. When the Israelites across the valley and east of the Jordan saw that Israel's army had fled and Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and ran. The Philistines came and occupied them.

They cut off Saul's head, stripped off his armour, and sent messengers throughout Philistine territory to announce the news in the temples of their idols and among the people. They put his armour in the temple of Ashtoreth and fastened his body to the wall of Beth-Shan. When the people of Jabesh-Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, all their brave men travelled through the night, took Saul's body and the bodies of his sons down from the wall of Beth-Shan, brought them to Jabesh and burned them there. Then they took their bones, buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
