Jonathan speaks for David
Saul told his son Jonathan and all his servants to kill David. But Jonathan cared deeply for David. Jonathan cared deeply for David, so he warned him: My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Watch yourself tomorrow morning. Find somewhere hidden and stay out of sight. I'll go out with my father to the field where you're hiding and speak to him about you. Whatever I learn, I'll tell you. He risked his life and killed the Philistine, and the Lord won a great victory for all Israel. You saw it and were glad. Why would you sin against innocent blood by killing David for no reason? Saul listened to Jonathan and swore: As surely as the Lord lives, David will not be put to death. Jonathan called David and told him everything. He brought David back to Saul, and David resumed his former service.
And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul's son, took great delight in David. And Jonathan told David: Saul my father is looking to kill you. So watch yourself now till the morning, please, and stay in a secret place and hide yourself. And I'll go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are. And I'll talk with my father about you. And what I see, I'll tell you. And Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him: Don't let the king sin against his servant, against David. Because he hasn't sinned against you, and because what he's done has been very good to you. Because he put his life in his hand and killed the Philistine, and the Lord worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it and celebrated. Saul tried to pin David to the wall with the spear, but David slipped away and the spear struck the wall. David fled and escaped that night. Saul sent men to David's house to watch it and kill him in the morning. Michal, David's wife, warned him: If you don't get out tonight, tomorrow you're dead. So Michal lowered David through a window. He got away and escaped. Michal took a household idol, put it in the bed, placed goat hair at its head and covered it with a cloth. When Saul's messengers came to arrest David, Michal told them: He's sick. Saul sent them back to see David and ordered: Bring him to me in his bed so I can kill him. When the messengers came in, they found the household idol in the bed with goat hair at its head. Saul demanded of Michal: Why did you trick me like this and let my enemy escape? Michal answered: He told me, Let me go, or I'll kill you.
And there was war again. And David went out and fought the Philistines and killed them with a great killing. And they ran from him. And the bad spirit from the Lord was on Saul as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. And David played with his hand. And Saul tried to pin David to the wall with the spear. But he got away out of Saul's presence, and he drove the spear into the wall. And David ran and got away that night. Saul sent messengers to David's house too, to watch him and to kill him in the morning. And Michal, David's wife, told him: If you don't save your life tonight, tomorrow you'll be killed. David escaped and went to Samuel at Ramah. He told Samuel everything Saul had done to him, and the two of them went to stay at Naioth. Saul was told: David is at Naioth in Ramah. Saul sent men to arrest David. But when they saw the company of prophets prophesying, with Samuel leading them, the Spirit of God came on Saul's messengers and they began prophesying too. When Saul heard about it, he sent another group, and they prophesied as well. He sent a third group, and the same thing happened again. Finally Saul himself went to Ramah. At the great cistern at Secu he asked: Where are Samuel and David? Someone answered: They're at Naioth in Ramah. Saul headed for Naioth, but the Spirit of God came on him too. He went along prophesying until he reached Naioth in Ramah. Saul stripped off his clothes too and prophesied before Samuel. He lay there naked all that day and night. That's why people say: Is Saul among the prophets too?
