The ark brought in
Then Solomon summoned the elders of Israel, the heads of the tribes and the chief fathers of the Israelites to Jerusalem, so they could bring up the ark of the Lord's covenant from the City of David, which is Zion. The poles were so long that their ends could be seen from the holy place in front of the inner sanctuary, though not from outside. They remain there to this day. When the priests came out of the holy place, a cloud filled the house of the Lord. The priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord. Then Solomon said: The Lord said he would live in thick darkness. I have surely built you a house to live in, a settled place for you forever.

Then Solomon said: The Lord said he would live in thick darkness.

Solomon blesses the people
The king turned around and blessed the whole assembly of Israel, while everyone stood. He said: Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who spoke with his own mouth to my father David and has fulfilled it with his own hand. Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city from any tribe of Israel in which to build a house for my name. But I chose David to rule over my people Israel. My father David had it in his heart to build a house for the name of the Lord God of Israel. The Lord told my father David: You did well to have it in your heart to build a house for my name. Still, you will not build the house. Your son, who comes from your own body, will build the house for my name. The Lord has fulfilled the word he spoke. I have taken my father David's place and sit on the throne of Israel, just as the Lord promised, and I have built the house for the name of the Lord God of Israel. I have also prepared a place there for the ark containing the Lord's covenant, which he made with our fathers when he brought them out of Egypt.
And the king turned his face and blessed all the gathering of Israel. And all the gathering of Israel stood. And he said: Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who spoke with his mouth to David my father and has carried it out with his hand: Since the day I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I didn't choose a town out of all the tribes of Israel to build a house in, so my name could be there. But I chose David to be over my people Israel. And it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of the Lord God of Israel. And the Lord said to David my father: Because it was in your heart to build a house for my name, you did well that it was in your heart. But you won't build the house. But your son who'll come out of your body, he'll build the house for my name. And the Lord has carried out his word that he spoke. And I've got up in the place of David my father and sit on the throne of Israel, the way the Lord promised, and have built a house for the name of the Lord God of Israel. And I've set a place there for the ark, where the covenant of the Lord is that he made with our fathers when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.

And the LORD hath performed his word that he spake, and I am risen up in the room of David my father, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and have built an house for the name of the LORD God of Israel. And I have set there a place for the ark, wherein is the covenant of the LORD, which he made with our fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.

The Lord has fulfilled the word he spoke. I have taken my father David's place and sit on the throne of Israel, just as the Lord promised, and I have built the house for the name of the Lord God of Israel.

Solomon's prayer
Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly of Israel and spread his hands towards heaven. He prayed: Lord God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below. You keep covenant and mercy with your servants who walk before you with all their heart. You have kept the promise you made to your servant David my father. You spoke it with your mouth and fulfilled it with your hand, as it stands today. Now, Lord God of Israel, keep the promise you made to your servant David my father: You will never lack a man before me to sit on the throne of Israel, provided your children take care how they live and walk before me as you have done. And now, God of Israel, please let the word you spoke to your servant David my father be confirmed. But will God really live on the earth? Heaven, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this house I have built. Yet pay attention to your servant's prayer and plea, Lord my God. Hear the cry and prayer your servant offers before you today. May your eyes be open towards this house night and day, towards the place of which you said: My name will be there. Hear the prayer your servant prays towards this place. Hear the pleas of your servant and your people Israel when they pray towards this place. Hear from heaven, your dwelling place; and when you hear, forgive. When someone sins against his neighbour and is required to take an oath, and the oath is made before your altar in this house, then hear from heaven and judge your servants. Condemn the wicked by bringing his conduct back on his own head, and justify the righteous by rewarding him according to his righteousness. When your people Israel are defeated by an enemy because they have sinned against you, and they turn back to you, confess your name and pray and plead with you in this house, then hear from heaven, forgive the sin of your people Israel and bring them back to the land you gave their fathers. When the heavens are shut and there is no rain because they have sinned against you, and they pray towards this place, confess your name and turn from their sin when you afflict them, then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your servants and your people Israel. Teach them the good way they should walk, and send rain on the land you gave your people as an inheritance. When famine or plague comes on the land, or blight, mildew, locusts or caterpillars; when enemies besiege their cities; whatever plague or sickness comes, whatever prayer or plea is made by any person or by all your people Israel, each knowing the trouble in his own heart and spreading his hands towards this house, then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Forgive and act. Deal with each person according to his ways, for you know his heart — you alone know the hearts of all people — so they may fear you all the days they live in the land you gave our fathers. And when a foreigner who is not one of your people Israel comes from a distant land because of your name — for people will hear of your great name, your mighty hand and your outstretched arm — when that foreigner comes and prays towards this house, hear from heaven, your dwelling place, and do whatever the foreigner asks of you. Then all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you as your people Israel do, and know that this house I have built bears your name. When your people go out to battle against their enemy wherever you send them, and they pray to the Lord towards the city you have chosen and the house I have built for your name, then hear their prayer and plea from heaven and uphold their cause. When they sin against you — for there is no one who does not sin — and you become angry with them and hand them over to an enemy who carries them captive to a land far away or near, and if they come to their senses in the land where they were taken, turn back and plead with you there, saying: We have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted wickedly, and if they return to you with all their heart and soul in the land of their enemies who carried them away, and pray towards the land you gave their fathers, the city you chose and the house I built for your name, then hear their prayer and plea from heaven, your dwelling place, and uphold their cause. Forgive your people who have sinned against you and all their wrongdoings against you. Cause those who carried them away to show them mercy. For they are your people and your inheritance, whom you brought out of Egypt, out of the middle of the iron furnace. May your eyes be open to the plea of your servant and the plea of your people Israel. Listen whenever they call to you. For you separated them from all the peoples of the earth to be your inheritance, just as you spoke through Moses your servant when you brought our fathers out of Egypt, Lord God.
And Solomon stood in front of the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the gathering of Israel, and spread out his hands towards heaven. And he said: Lord God of Israel, there's no God like you in heaven above or on earth below, who keeps covenant and mercy with your servants who walk in front of you with all their heart. You've kept with your servant David my father what you promised him. And you spoke with your mouth and have carried it out with your hand, the way it is today. So now, Lord God of Israel, keep with your servant David my father what you promised him: There won't fail you a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel — only if your children watch their way, to walk in front of me the way you've walked in front of me. And now, God of Israel, let your word be made firm, please, that you spoke to your servant David my father. But will God really live on the earth? Look — heaven and the heaven of heavens can't hold you. How much less this house I've built. But look at the prayer of your servant and at his pleading, Lord my God, to listen to the cry and to the prayer your servant prays in front of you today. So your eyes can be open towards this house night and day, towards the place you've said: My name will be there — to listen to the prayer your servant prays towards this place. And listen to the pleading of your servant and of your people Israel, when they pray towards this place. And hear in heaven your dwelling place. And when you hear, forgive. If any man sins against his neighbour and an oath is laid on him to make him swear, and the oath comes in front of your altar in this house — then hear in heaven and do it, and judge your servants, condemning the wicked by bringing his way on his head, and clearing the righteous by giving him according to his righteousness. When your people Israel are struck down in front of the enemy because they've sinned against you, and turn back to you again and own up to your name and pray and plead with you in this house — then hear in heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them back again to the land you gave their fathers. When the sky is shut up and there's no rain because they've sinned against you, and they pray towards this place and own up to your name and turn from their sin when you trouble them — then hear in heaven and forgive the sin of your servants and of your people Israel, when you've taught them the good way they should walk in. And give rain on your land that you've given your people as an inheritance. If there's famine in the land, if there's plague, blight, mildew, locust or caterpillar, if the ones against them lay siege to them in the land of their towns, whatever plague, whatever sickness there is — whatever prayer, whatever pleading is made by any man or by all your people Israel, when every man knows the trouble of his own heart and spreads out his hands towards this house — then hear in heaven your dwelling place and forgive and do, and give to every man according to all his ways, whose heart you know. Because you alone know the hearts of all the sons of men. So they can fear you all the days they live in the land you gave our fathers. What's more, about a stranger who isn't of your people Israel but has come out of a far country for your name's sake — because they'll hear of your great name and of your strong hand and of your stretched out arm — when he comes and prays towards this house, hear in heaven your dwelling place and do according to everything the stranger calls to you for — so all the people of the earth can know your name, to fear you the way your people Israel do, and so they can know this house I've built is called by your name. If your people go out to battle against the ones against them, wherever you send them, and they pray to the Lord towards the town you've chosen and towards the house I've built for your name — then hear in heaven their prayer and their pleading, and keep their cause. If they sin against you — because there's no man who doesn't sin — and you're angry with them and hand them over to the enemy, so they carry them off captive to the land of the enemy, far or near, and if they come to themselves in the land where they're carried off, and turn back and plead with you in the land of the ones who carried them off: We've sinned and have done wrong, we've done wickedly — and so come back to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of the ones against them who carried them off, and pray to you towards their land that you gave their fathers, the town you've chosen and the house I've built for your name — then hear their prayer and their pleading in heaven your dwelling place, and keep their cause. And forgive your people who've sinned against you, and all what they've stepped over that they've stepped over against you. And give them pity in front of the ones who carried them off, so they'll have pity on them. Because they're your people and your inheritance, that you brought out of Egypt, out of the middle of the iron furnace. Let your eyes be open to the pleading of your servant and to the pleading of your people Israel, to listen to them in everything they call to you for. Because you set them apart from all the people of the earth to be your inheritance, the way you spoke by the hand of Moses your servant, when you brought our fathers out of Egypt, Lord God.
And Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven: And he said, LORD God of Israel, there is no God like thee, in heaven above, or on earth beneath, who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart: Who hast kept with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him: thou spakest also with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day. Therefore now, LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel; so that thy children take heed to their way, that they walk before me as thou hast walked before me. And now, O God of Israel, let thy word, I pray thee, be verified, which thou spakest unto thy servant David my father. But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded? Yet have thou respect unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O LORD my God, to hearken unto the cry and to the prayer, which thy servant prayeth before thee to day: That thine eyes may be open toward this house night and day, even toward the place of which thou hast said, My name shall be there: that thou mayest hearken unto the prayer which thy servant shall make toward this place. And hearken thou to the supplication of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, when they shall pray toward this place: and hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place: and when thou hearest, forgive. If any man trespass against his neighbour, and an oath be laid upon him to cause him to swear, and the oath come before thine altar in this house: Then hear thou in heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, condemning the wicked, to bring his way upon his head; and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness. When thy people Israel be smitten down before the enemy, because they have sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee, and confess thy name, and pray, and make supplication unto thee in this house: Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which thou gavest unto their fathers. When heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against thee; if they pray toward this place, and confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou afflictest them: Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, that thou teach them the good way wherein they should walk, and give rain upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance. If there be in the land famine, if there be pestilence, blasting, mildew, locust, or if there be caterpiller; if their enemy besiege them in the land of their cities; whatsoever plague, whatsoever sickness there be; What prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house: Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;) That they may fear thee all the days that they live in the land which thou gavest unto our fathers. Moreover concerning a stranger, that is not of thy people Israel, but cometh out of a far country for thy name’s sake; (For they shall hear of thy great name, and of thy strong hand, and of thy stretched out arm;) when he shall come and pray toward this house; Hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for: that all people of the earth may know thy name, to fear thee, as do thy people Israel; and that they may know that this house, which I have builded, is called by thy name. If thy people go out to battle against their enemy, whithersoever thou shalt send them, and shall pray unto the LORD toward the city which thou hast chosen, and toward the house that I have built for thy name: Then hear thou in heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause. Now, Lord God of Israel, keep the promise you made to your servant David my father: You will never lack a man before me to sit on the throne of Israel, provided your children take care how they live and walk before me as you have done.
So now, Lord God of Israel, keep with your servant David my father what you promised him: There won't fail you a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel — only if your children watch their way, to walk in front of me the way you've walked in front of me.
Therefore now, LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit on the throne of Israel; so that thy children take heed to their way, that they walk before me as thou hast walked before me.
And now, God of Israel, please let the word you spoke to your servant David my father be confirmed.
And now, God of Israel, let your word be made firm, please, that you spoke to your servant David my father.
And now, O God of Israel, let thy word, I pray thee, be verified, which thou spakest unto thy servant David my father.
But will God really live on the earth? Heaven, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this house I have built.
But will God really live on the earth? Look — heaven and the heaven of heavens can't hold you. How much less this house I've built.
But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?
Yet pay attention to your servant's prayer and plea, Lord my God. Hear the cry and prayer your servant offers before you today.
But look at the prayer of your servant and at his pleading, Lord my God, to listen to the cry and to the prayer your servant prays in front of you today.
Yet have thou respect unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O LORD my God, to hearken unto the cry and to the prayer, which thy servant prayeth before thee to day:
May your eyes be open towards this house night and day, towards the place of which you said: My name will be there. Hear the prayer your servant prays towards this place.

then hear from heaven and judge your servants. Condemn the wicked by bringing his conduct back on his own head, and justify the righteous by rewarding him according to his righteousness.

(For they shall hear of thy great name, and of thy strong hand, and of thy stretched out arm;) when he shall come and pray toward this house;
hear from heaven, your dwelling place, and do whatever the foreigner asks of you. Then all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you as your people Israel do, and know that this house I have built bears your name.
hear in heaven your dwelling place and do according to everything the stranger calls to you for — so all the people of the earth can know your name, to fear you the way your people Israel do, and so they can know this house I've built is called by your name.

Not one word has failed from all the good promises he gave through Moses his servant. May the Lord our God be with us as he was with our fathers. May he never leave us or abandon us. May he turn our hearts towards himself, so we walk in all his ways and keep the commands, rules and judgments he gave our fathers. May these words I have pleaded before the Lord remain near the Lord our God day and night, so he upholds the cause of his servant and his people Israel as each day requires. Then all the peoples of the earth will know that the Lord is God and there is no other. They celebrated for seven days and another seven days — fourteen days altogether. On the eighth day he sent the people away. They blessed the king and went home joyful and glad for all the goodness the Lord had shown to David his servant and Israel his people.
