Solomon's wives turn his heart
King Solomon loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh's daughter: Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. They came from nations the Lord had warned the Israelites about: Do not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods. But Solomon clung to these women in love. He had seven hundred wives who were princesses and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart away. As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods. His heart was no longer fully devoted to the Lord his God as the heart of his father David had been. Solomon followed Ashtoreth, goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom, the detestable god of the Ammonites. Solomon did what was evil in the Lord's sight and did not follow the Lord completely as his father David had. On the hill east of Jerusalem Solomon built a high place for Chemosh, the detestable god of Moab, and for Molech, the detestable god of the Ammonites. He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods. The Lord was angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. The Lord had specifically commanded him not to follow other gods, but Solomon did not keep the Lord's command. So the Lord said to Solomon: Since you've done this and have not kept my covenant and rules as I commanded you, I will certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant. But for your father David's sake I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it from your son's hand. Even then I will not tear away the whole kingdom. I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of my servant David and Jerusalem, the city I have chosen.

I'll give one tribe to your son, for David my servant's sake and for Jerusalem's sake, that I've chosen.

So the Lord said to Solomon: Since you've done this and have not kept my covenant and rules as I commanded you, I will certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant.
So the Lord said to Solomon: Because this has been done by you, and you haven't kept my covenant and my rules that I've ordered you, I'll definitely tear the kingdom from you and give it to your servant.
Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon, Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded thee, I will surely rend the kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant.
But for your father David's sake I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it from your son's hand.
But I won't do it in your days, for David your father's sake. But I'll tear it out of the hand of your son.
Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it for David thy father’s sake: but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son.
Even then I will not tear away the whole kingdom. I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of my servant David and Jerusalem, the city I have chosen.

Enemies raised up
Then the Lord raised up an enemy against Solomon: Hadad the Edomite, a member of Edom's royal family. Years earlier, while David was in Edom, Joab commander of the army had gone up to bury the dead after striking down every male in Edom. Joab and all Israel stayed there for six months until every male in Edom had been cut off. But Hadad, who was still a little child, escaped to Egypt with some Edomite servants of his father. They left Midian, went to Paran, gathered men from there and continued to Egypt. Pharaoh king of Egypt gave Hadad a house, food and land. Hadad found such favour with Pharaoh that Pharaoh gave him the sister of his own wife, Queen Tahpenes, as his wife. Tahpenes' sister bore Hadad a son named Genubath. Tahpenes weaned him in Pharaoh's palace, and Genubath grew up there among Pharaoh's sons. While in Egypt, Hadad heard that David had died and that Joab commander of the army was dead. He told Pharaoh: Let me go back to my own country. Pharaoh asked: What have you lacked here with me that makes you want to go home? Hadad answered: Nothing — but please let me go anyway. God raised up another enemy against Solomon: Rezon son of Eliadah, who had fled from his master Hadadezer king of Zobah. Rezon gathered men around himself and became leader of a raiding band after David struck down the forces of Zobah. They went to Damascus, settled there and took control of it. Rezon was Israel's enemy throughout Solomon's reign, adding to the trouble Hadad caused. He hated Israel and ruled over Syria.

And Hadad found great favour in the sight of Pharaoh, so he gave him as a wife the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen. For it came to pass, when David was in Edom, and Joab the captain of the host was gone up to bury the slain, after he had smitten every male in Edom; (For six months did Joab remain there with all Israel, until he had cut off every male in Edom:) That Hadad fled, he and certain Edomites of his father’s servants with him, to go into Egypt; Hadad being yet a little child. Jeroboam and the torn cloak
Jeroboam son of Nebat also rebelled against the king. He was an Ephrathite from Zeredah and one of Solomon's servants. His widowed mother was named Zeruah. This is how his rebellion began: Solomon was building the Millo and repairing the breaches in the City of David his father. Jeroboam was a capable and hardworking young man. When Solomon saw how well he worked, he put him in charge of all the labour force of the house of Joseph. Around that time Jeroboam was leaving Jerusalem when Ahijah the Shilonite prophet met him on the road. Ahijah was wearing a new cloak, and the two of them were alone in the countryside. Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces. He told Jeroboam: Take ten pieces for yourself. This is what the Lord God of Israel says: I am tearing the kingdom out of Solomon's hand and giving ten tribes to you. Solomon's son will keep one tribe for the sake of my servant David and Jerusalem, the city I chose out of all the tribes of Israel. I am doing this because they have abandoned me and worshipped Ashtoreth goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh god of Moab and Milcom god of the Ammonites. They have not walked in my ways, done what is right in my eyes or kept my rules and judgments as David did. Still, I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon's hand. For the sake of my servant David, whom I chose because he kept my commands and rules, I will let Solomon remain ruler for the rest of his life. But I will take the kingdom from his son's hand and give ten tribes to you. I will give his son one tribe so that my servant David may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city I chose as the place for my name. I will take you, and you will reign over everything your heart desires. You will be king over Israel. If you listen to everything I command you, follow my ways, do what is right in my eyes and keep my rules and commands as David my servant did, I will be with you. I will build you an enduring house as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you. Because of this I will humble David's descendants, but not forever. Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, so Jeroboam got out of there and fled to Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt. He stayed in Egypt until Solomon died. The rest of Solomon's acts, everything he did and the record of his wisdom are written in the book of the acts of Solomon. Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel for forty years. Then Solomon died and was buried in the City of David his father. His son Rehoboam reigned in his place.

And Ahijah took the new cloak on him and tore it in twelve pieces. And he said to Jeroboam: Take ten pieces. Because this is what the Lord God of Israel says. Look — I'll tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and will give ten tribes to you. But he'll have one tribe, for the sake of my servant David and for Jerusalem's sake, the town I've chosen out of all the tribes of Israel. Because they've left me and have bowed down to Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites and Milkom the god of the sons of Ammon, and haven't walked in my ways to do what's right in my eyes and to keep my rules and my judgments, the way David his father did. But I won't take the whole kingdom out of his hand. But I'll make him ruler all the days of his life, for David my servant's sake, who I chose, because he kept my orders and my rules. But I'll take the kingdom out of his son's hand and will give it to you, ten tribes. And to his son I'll give one tribe, so David my servant can have a lamp always in front of me in Jerusalem, the town I've chosen for myself to put my name there. And I'll take you, and you'll rule according to everything your soul wants, and you'll be king over Israel. And if you'll listen to everything I order you and will walk in my ways and do what's right in my sight, to keep my rules and my orders the way David my servant did — then I'll be with you and will build you a sure house, the way I built for David, and will give Israel to you. And I'll trouble the offspring of David for this, but not forever. So Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam. And Jeroboam got up and ran into Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt till the death of Solomon. And the rest of the acts of Solomon, and everything he did and his wisdom, aren't they written in the book of the acts of Solomon? And the time Solomon ruled in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. And Solomon died and was buried in the City of David his father. And Rehoboam his son ruled in his place.

And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth, and shalt be king over Israel. And it shall be, if thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in my ways, and do that is right in my sight, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did; that I will be with thee, and build thee a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee. And I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not for ever. Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam. And Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt, unto Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon. And the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon? And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. And Solomon slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David his father: and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead.
Jeroboam son of Nebat also rebelled against the king. He was an Ephrathite from Zeredah and one of Solomon's servants. His widowed mother was named Zeruah.
And Jeroboam son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zeredah, Solomon's servant, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow woman, lifted up his hand against the king too.
And Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zereda, Solomon’s servant, whose mother’s name was Zeruah, a widow woman, even he lifted up his hand against the king.
This is how his rebellion began: Solomon was building the Millo and repairing the breaches in the City of David his father.
And this was the reason he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built the Millo and repaired the breaks of the City of David his father.
And this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father.
Jeroboam was a capable and hardworking young man. When Solomon saw how well he worked, he put him in charge of all the labour force of the house of Joseph.
And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour. And Solomon saw the young man, that he worked hard, and he made him ruler over all the load of the house of Joseph.
And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour: and Solomon seeing the young man that he was industrious, he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph.
Around that time Jeroboam was leaving Jerusalem when Ahijah the Shilonite prophet met him on the road. Ahijah was wearing a new cloak, and the two of them were alone in the countryside.
And at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the way. And he'd put on a new cloak. And the two of them were alone in the field.
And it came to pass at that time when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field:
Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces.
And Ahijah took the new cloak on him and tore it in twelve pieces.
And Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him, and rent it in twelve pieces:
He told Jeroboam: Take ten pieces for yourself. This is what the Lord God of Israel says: I am tearing the kingdom out of Solomon's hand and giving ten tribes to you.
And he said to Jeroboam: Take ten pieces. Because this is what the Lord God of Israel says. Look — I'll tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and will give ten tribes to you.
And he said to Jeroboam, Take thee ten pieces: for thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, Behold, I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give ten tribes to thee:
Solomon's son will keep one tribe for the sake of my servant David and Jerusalem, the city I chose out of all the tribes of Israel.
But he'll have one tribe, for the sake of my servant David and for Jerusalem's sake, the town I've chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.
(But he shall have one tribe for my servant David’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel:)
I am doing this because they have abandoned me and worshipped Ashtoreth goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh god of Moab and Milcom god of the Ammonites. They have not walked in my ways, done what is right in my eyes or kept my rules and judgments as David did.
Because they've left me and have bowed down to Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites and Milkom the god of the sons of Ammon, and haven't walked in my ways to do what's right in my eyes and to keep my rules and my judgments, the way David his father did.
Because that they have forsaken me, and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon, and have not walked in my ways, to do that which is right in mine eyes, and to keep my statutes and my judgments, as did David his father.
Still, I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon's hand. For the sake of my servant David, whom I chose because he kept my commands and rules, I will let Solomon remain ruler for the rest of his life.
But I won't take the whole kingdom out of his hand. But I'll make him ruler all the days of his life, for David my servant's sake, who I chose, because he kept my orders and my rules.
Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant’s sake, whom I chose, because he kept my commandments and my statutes:
But I will take the kingdom from his son's hand and give ten tribes to you.
But I'll take the kingdom out of his son's hand and will give it to you, ten tribes.
But I will take the kingdom out of his son’s hand, and will give it unto thee, even ten tribes.
I will give his son one tribe so that my servant David may always have a lamp before me in Jerusalem, the city I chose as the place for my name.
And to his son I'll give one tribe, so David my servant can have a lamp always in front of me in Jerusalem, the town I've chosen for myself to put my name there.
And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light alway before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.
I will take you, and you will reign over everything your heart desires. You will be king over Israel.
And I'll take you, and you'll rule according to everything your soul wants, and you'll be king over Israel.
And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth, and shalt be king over Israel.
If you listen to everything I command you, follow my ways, do what is right in my eyes and keep my rules and commands as David my servant did, I will be with you. I will build you an enduring house as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you.
And if you'll listen to everything I order you and will walk in my ways and do what's right in my sight, to keep my rules and my orders the way David my servant did — then I'll be with you and will build you a sure house, the way I built for David, and will give Israel to you.
And it shall be, if thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee, and wilt walk in my ways, and do that is right in my sight, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did; that I will be with thee, and build thee a sure house, as I built for David, and will give Israel unto thee.
Because of this I will humble David's descendants, but not forever.
And I'll trouble the offspring of David for this, but not forever.
And I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not for ever.
Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, so Jeroboam got out of there and fled to Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt. He stayed in Egypt until Solomon died.
So Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam. And Jeroboam got up and ran into Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt till the death of Solomon.
Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam. And Jeroboam arose, and fled into Egypt, unto Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
The rest of Solomon's acts, everything he did and the record of his wisdom are written in the book of the acts of Solomon.
And the rest of the acts of Solomon, and everything he did and his wisdom, aren't they written in the book of the acts of Solomon?
And the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon?
Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel for forty years.
And the time Solomon ruled in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.
And the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.
Then Solomon died and was buried in the City of David his father. His son Rehoboam reigned in his place.
