Divisions at Corinth

Now I beg you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be joined together in the same mind and the same judgement. Because it has been reported to me about you, my brothers, by Chloe's people, that there is quarrelling among you. What I mean is this: each of you is saying, I am with Paul, or I am with Apollos, or I am with Cephas, or I am with Christ. Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptised in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptised none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so nobody can say you were baptised in my name. I did baptise the household of Stephanas as well. Beyond that, I don't recall baptising anyone. Because Christ didn't send me to baptise but to preach the gospel — and not with clever words, in case the cross of Christ should be emptied of its power.

Now I beg you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing and that there aren't any divisions among you, but that you're joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. Because it's been told me about you, my brothers, by the ones of the house of Chloe, that there are arguments among you. Now this is what I mean — that every one of you says: I'm of Paul. And: I'm of Apollos. And: I'm of Cephas. And: I'm of Christ. Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptised in the name of Paul? I thank God I baptised none of you except Crispus and Gaius. In case anyone should say I'd baptised in my own name. And I baptised the household of Stephanas too. Besides that, I don't know whether I baptised any other. Because Christ didn't send me to baptise but to preach the good news — not with wisdom of words, in case the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.

Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

10

Now I beg you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be joined together in the same mind and the same judgement.

Plain English

Now I beg you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing and that there aren't any divisions among you, but that you're joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

King James Version, 1611

Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

11

Because it has been reported to me about you, my brothers, by Chloe's people, that there is quarrelling among you.

Plain English

Because it's been told me about you, my brothers, by the ones of the house of Chloe, that there are arguments among you.

King James Version, 1611

For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.

12

What I mean is this: each of you is saying, I am with Paul, or I am with Apollos, or I am with Cephas, or I am with Christ.

Plain English

Now this is what I mean — that every one of you says: I'm of Paul. And: I'm of Apollos. And: I'm of Cephas. And: I'm of Christ.

King James Version, 1611

Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

13

Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptised in the name of Paul?

King James Version, 1611

14

I thank God that I baptised none of you except Crispus and Gaius,

Plain English

I thank God I baptised none of you except Crispus and Gaius.

King James Version, 1611

15

so nobody can say you were baptised in my name.

Plain English

King James Version, 1611

Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.

16

I did baptise the household of Stephanas as well. Beyond that, I don't recall baptising anyone.

Plain English

And I baptised the household of Stephanas too. Besides that, I don't know whether I baptised any other.

King James Version, 1611

And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.

17

Because Christ didn't send me to baptise but to preach the gospel — and not with clever words, in case the cross of Christ should be emptied of its power.

Plain English

Because Christ didn't send me to baptise but to preach the good news — not with wisdom of words, in case the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.

King James Version, 1611

For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

The foolishness of God

Because the message of the cross is foolishness to those who perish. But to us who are saved, it is the power of God. For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and bring to nothing the understanding of the clever. Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this world? Hasn't God made the wisdom of this world foolish? Because in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom didn't come to know God. So it pleased God, through the foolishness of what was preached, to save those who believe. The Jews ask for a sign, and the Greeks look for wisdom. But we preach Christ crucified — a stumbling block to the Jews, and foolishness to the Greeks. But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. Look at your own calling, brothers — not many wise by human standards, not many powerful, not many well born, are called. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. And God chose the low things of the world, and the things looked down on, and the things that are not, to bring to nothing the things that are — so that no flesh should boast in his presence. But it is from him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and holiness and redemption, so that, as it is written: Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.

Because the preaching of the cross is foolishness to the ones who die. But to us who are saved it's the power of God. Because it's written: I'll wreck the wisdom of the wise and will bring to nothing the understanding of the understanding ones. Where's the wise? Where's the scribe? Where's the arguer of this world? Hasn't God made foolish the wisdom of this world? Because after that, in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom didn't know God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save the ones who believe. Because the Jews ask for a sign, and the Greeks look for wisdom. But we preach Christ crucified — to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness. But to the ones who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. Because you see your calling, brothers — that not plenty of wise men after the flesh, not plenty of mighty, not plenty of noble are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise. And God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things that are mighty. And the low things of the world and the things looked down on God has chosen, yes, and the things that aren't, to bring to nothing the things that are. So no flesh should boast in his presence. But of him you're in Christ Jesus, who of God is made to us wisdom and righteousness and holiness and buying back. So, as it's written: The one who boasts, let him boast in the Lord.

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

18

Because the message of the cross is foolishness to those who perish. But to us who are saved, it is the power of God.

Plain English

Because the preaching of the cross is foolishness to the ones who die. But to us who are saved it's the power of God.

King James Version, 1611

For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

19

For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

20

Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this world? Hasn't God made the wisdom of this world foolish?

Plain English

King James Version, 1611

Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

21

Because in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom didn't come to know God. So it pleased God, through the foolishness of what was preached, to save those who believe.

Plain English

Because after that, in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom didn't know God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save the ones who believe.

King James Version, 1611

For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

22

The Jews ask for a sign, and the Greeks look for wisdom.

Plain English

Because the Jews ask for a sign, and the Greeks look for wisdom.

King James Version, 1611

For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

23

But we preach Christ crucified — a stumbling block to the Jews, and foolishness to the Greeks.

Plain English

But we preach Christ crucified — to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness.

King James Version, 1611

But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

24

But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

Plain English

But to the ones who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

King James Version, 1611

But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

25

Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

King James Version, 1611

Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

26

Look at your own calling, brothers — not many wise by human standards, not many powerful, not many well born, are called.

Plain English

Because you see your calling, brothers — that not plenty of wise men after the flesh, not plenty of mighty, not plenty of noble are called.

King James Version, 1611

For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

27

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

Plain English

But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise. And God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things that are mighty.

King James Version, 1611

But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

28

And God chose the low things of the world, and the things looked down on, and the things that are not, to bring to nothing the things that are —

Plain English

And the low things of the world and the things looked down on God has chosen, yes, and the things that aren't, to bring to nothing the things that are.

King James Version, 1611

And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

29

so that no flesh should boast in his presence.

Plain English

So no flesh should boast in his presence.

King James Version, 1611

That no flesh should glory in his presence.

30

But it is from him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and holiness and redemption,

Plain English

But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

31

so that, as it is written: Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.

Plain English

So, as it's written: The one who boasts, let him boast in the Lord.

King James Version, 1611

That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
