So Hanun seized David's servants, shaved them, cut off their garments at the buttocks, and sent them away. When David was told what had happened to the men, he sent people to meet them because they were deeply humiliated. The king told them: Stay at Jericho until your beards grow back, then return.

They hired thirty-two thousand chariots, along with the king of Maachah and his people, who came and camped before Medeba. The Ammonites gathered from their cities and came out for battle. When David heard about it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty warriors. The Ammonites came out and formed their battle line before the city gate, while the kings who had come to help them stayed by themselves in the field. Joab saw that battle lines were forming against him both in front and behind. He chose some of Israel's best troops and formed them up against the Syrians. He placed the rest of the troops under his brother Abishai, and they formed up against the Ammonites. Joab said: If the Syrians are too strong for me, come and help me. If the Ammonites are too strong for you, I'll come and help you. Be courageous. Let's stand strong for our people and for the cities of our God, and let the Lord do what is good in his eyes. Joab and the troops with him advanced against the Syrians, and the Syrians fled before him. When the Ammonites saw the Syrians fleeing, they also fled from Abishai his brother and went back into the city. Then Joab returned to Jerusalem. When the Syrians saw they were beaten before Israel, they sent messengers and brought out the Syrians from beyond the River. And Shophak the commander of the army of Hadarezer went before them. It was told David. And he gathered all Israel and went over the Jordan and came on them and drew up against them. So when David had drawn up in battle against the Syrians, they fought him. But the Syrians fled from Israel. And David killed seven thousand men of Syrian chariots and forty thousand men on foot, and killed Shophak the commander of the army. When the servants of Hadarezer saw they were beaten before Israel, they made peace with David and served him. And the Syrians wouldn't help the Ammonites any more.
