God's word to David
When David was settled in his house, he said to Nathan the prophet: Here I am living in a cedar house while the ark of the Lord's covenant sits under curtains. Nathan told David: Do what you've got in mind, because God is with you. That night the word of God came to Nathan: Go and tell David my servant: This is what the Lord says: You are not the one who will build me a house to live in. Because I haven't lived in a house since the day I brought Israel up to this day. But I've gone from tent to tent, and from one tent to another. Wherever I've went with all Israel, did I say a word to any of the judges of Israel, that I commanded to feed my people: Why haven't you built me a house of cedar? Now tell my servant David: This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, and made you ruler over my people Israel. I've been with you wherever you've gone. I've defeated all your enemies before you, and I've made your name like the names of the great men of the earth. I'll set a place for my people Israel and plant them, so they can live in their own place and not be shifted any more. And the children of wickedness won't waste them any more, as they did at first, Since the days when I appointed judges over my people Israel, I have subdued all your enemies. And I tell you this: the Lord will build you a house. When your days are finished and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up one of your sons after you and establish his kingdom. He will build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will not take my mercy away from him as I took it from the one before you. I will settle him in my house and my kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever. According to all these words and according to all this vision, that's what Nathan spoke to David.

Wherever I've walked with all Israel, did I say a word to any of the judges of Israel, that I ordered to feed my people: Why haven't you built me a house of cedar? So now say this to my servant David: This is what the Lord Almighty says. I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, so you'd be ruler over my people Israel. And I've been with you wherever you've walked, and have cut off all the ones against you from in front of you, and have made you a name like the name of the great men on the earth. And I tell you the Lord will build you a house. And when your days are up that you have to go to be with your fathers, then I'll set up your offspring after you, one of your sons. And I'll make his kingdom firm. He'll build me a house, and I'll make his throne firm forever. I'll be his father, and he'll be my son. And I won't take my mercy away from him, the way I took it from the one before you. But I'll settle him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne will be made firm forever. According to all these words and according to all this vision, that's what Nathan spoke to David.

Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people, saying, Why have ye not built me an house of cedars? Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel: And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth. Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning, And since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. Moreover I will subdue all thine enemies. Furthermore I tell thee that the LORD will build thee an house. And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee: But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for evermore. According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel:
I've been with you wherever you've gone. I've defeated all your enemies before you, and I've made your name like the names of the great men of the earth.
And I've been with you wherever you've walked, and have cut off all the ones against you from in front of you, and have made you a name like the name of the great men on the earth.
And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth.
I'll set a place for my people Israel and plant them, so they can live in their own place and not be shifted any more. And the children of wickedness won't waste them any more, as they did at first,

And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.
He will build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever.

According to all these words and according to all this vision, that's what Nathan spoke to David.

David's prayer
King David went in and sat before the Lord. He said: Who am I, Lord God, and what is my family, that you've brought me this far? This was a small thing in your eyes, God. Because you've spoken about your servant's house for a great while to come, and have looked at me as a man of high rank, Lord God. What more can I say to you about the honour you've given your servant? You know me, your servant. Lord, for your servant's sake and according to your own heart, you've done all this greatness, in making known all these great things. Lord, there is no one like you and no God besides you, according to everything we've heard with our own ears. What nation on earth is like your people Israel — the people God went to redeem as his own, making himself a name of greatness and terror by driving out nations before the people he redeemed from Egypt? Because you've made your people Israel your own people forever. And you, Lord, are their God. Now, Lord, let the promise you've spoken about your servant and his house stand forever. Do exactly as you've said. Let it be established, so your name is honoured forever: The Lord Almighty is the God of Israel, a God to Israel. And let the house of David your servant be established before you. Because you, my God, have told your servant you'll build him a house. That's why your servant has found it in his heart to pray before you. Now, Lord, you're God, and you've promised this goodness to your servant. Now please bless the house of your servant so it may remain before you forever. For you, Lord, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.

So now, Lord, let the thing you've spoken about your servant and about his house be made firm forever, and do the way you've said. Let it be made firm, so your name is made great forever: The Lord Almighty is the God of Israel, a God to Israel. And let the house of David your servant be made firm in front of you. Because you, my God, have told your servant you'll build him a house. That's why your servant has found it in his heart to pray in front of you. And now, Lord, you're God, and you've promised this goodness to your servant. So now let it please you to bless the house of your servant, so it can be in front of you forever. Because you bless, Lord, and it'll be blessed forever.

And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant’s house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O LORD God. What can David speak more to thee for the honour of thy servant? for thou knowest thy servant. O LORD, for thy servant’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things. O LORD, there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears. And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt? For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, LORD, becamest their God. Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said. Let it even be established, that thy name may be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee. For thou, O my God, hast told thy servant that thou wilt build him an house: therefore thy servant hath found in his heart to pray before thee. And now, LORD, thou art God, and hast promised this goodness unto thy servant: Now therefore let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever: for thou blessest, O LORD, and it shall be blessed for ever.
King David went in and sat before the Lord. He said: Who am I, Lord God, and what is my family, that you've brought me this far?
And David the king came and sat in front of the Lord and said: Who am I, Lord God, and what's my house, that you've brought me this far?

And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt?
Because you've made your people Israel your own people forever. And you, Lord, are their God.

Now, Lord, let the promise you've spoken about your servant and his house stand forever. Do exactly as you've said.
